What are you and your significant other doing for Valentine's Day? Is Valentine's Day even relevant for those of you who are older / have been married a while?

I'm doing the same stuff I do any other night, and she'll be wishing I was "romantic."

While some believe that Valentine's Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine's death or burial--which probably occurred around A.D. 270--others claim that the Christian church may have decided to place St. Valentine's feast day in the middle of February in an effort to "Christianize" the pagan celebration of Lupercalia. Celebrated at the ides of February, or February 15, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus.

To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at a sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification. They would then strip the goat's hide into strips, dip them into the sacrificial blood and take to the streets, gently slapping both women and crop fields with the goat hide. Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed the touch of the hides because it was believed to make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city's bachelors would each choose a name and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage.

Dinner reservations. She's pretty sentimental, so the relevancy of VDay probably won't wear off for her.

Make an agreement that you will go out the Thursday night after Valentines day. Make it your "special" tradition.

No prix fixe menu. You get the weekend staff without the weekend crowd. If they over-bought champagne for Valentines proper, you might get a deal.

Not to mention flowers, which mysteriously increase in price around February 1st, seem to go back to the regular price.

We sit at home on the 14th, watch a movie, and talk shit about how we're going to get a much better meal at a much better price next week.

I think we're going to go to The Melting Pot. Fondue is way fun, but way too expensive for anything other than a special occasion. So this will be our one fondue experience of the year. Plus this is our ~first Valentine's Day~ so I don't feel bad about splurging a bit. Ordered him a few neat things earlier today, too.

Then we're going to go see The Monument's Men after that (comes out on the 14th!). Then.... a romantic evening of League of Legends and vodka after that perhaps? Glad it's on a Friday night.

I think we're going to go to The Melting Pot.

One of my favorite places. I take the wife to the one in Littleton a couple times a year to sit in the cellar/prison cells of the historical building. Best place for fondue if you don't mind spending about $200 for two people.

For Valentine's day I'm getting my wife a boob job.

Whoever is paying gets to pronounce Coq Au Vin however they want to. If the server corrects you, accuse him/her of loving "the Coq".

The Melting Pot was close to our old office before we moved downtown. I'm not a big fan of the cuisine, but its a neat place and they do it well.

my fiancé and I go to this little joint near our house called The Wooden Spoon each year. She's a sous chef herself so it can be a little hard to impress ya know? This place though does simple upscale dishes and are really big on local ingredients so it gets a high rating in our book. The menu is always changing each month so it's refreshing to try something new whenever you go in.

Afterwards we usually nerd it up with some board games and wine, I think we're doing Mage Knight this year.

Rome was hands down one of the best shows ever. only problem was i had to watch it late at night so the kids would not think i was a pervert and did not learn the word "cunt" at age 5. lol.
as for Valentine's day, i did not think of shit :/ although, i will be getting married on the 17th, so i guess that kinda compensates? either way, i should plan something for next friday, goddamit

It might not necessarily happen. I'm just not that much of a romantic person. At first I was, I guess because I was trying to impress her. A lot of people live together for a long time and still get those early relationship butterflies (or at least they pretend like they do).

Maybe if your valentine's day is more "open-ended" he'll give you butterflies for years.
