Server Needs MORE RMT, Not Less

So, it's true this server went from a policy of:

"Don't try to pay real life money for in-game goods or you will be banned from the server"

to:

"Please pay real life money for in-game goods, the server as a whole will benefit"

I understand why people might get upset at this policy reversal, but I that's looking at it the wrong way.

Think about it: if SOE's lawyers don't sue P99 over this, then that pretty much legitimizes a way for P99 to make money. This would mean P99 could finally make money, not just beg for it, for new servers, hosting costs, and maybe even a paycheck for staff members, all by having their own Kickstarter campaign.

Others have already suggested "slot machine" style plat sinks in the game; why not have them but with real money? You donate $50 to the P99 "Slot Machine Development" kickstarter campaign, and as a reward you get 50 credits. You can give those credits to an NPC in-game for a chance at cool items (guises, fungi staffs, xp potions, etc.).

As long as it's all no-drop there's no real harm: who cares if the guy next to you can look like a dark elf or regenerate a little faster? As long as they can't sell their winnings it won't hurt your enjoyment of the game (and it will help the server).

I was upset at first too (thus the post's start) but I'm really starting to think this is a genius way of testing a system that would let the staff make money off us. And I'd argue that's a good thing.

Do you mean that categorically? In other words, IF it was no drop items only and IF it was only certain "collector's items" you'd still feel P99 was shooting itself in the face? What if you throw the fungi staff out so that it's just things like the Guise and one-use potions?

I don't want people paying for fungis with real life $ either, but don't the staff deserve more than just whatever donations a few kind people give? Not to mention all the users, who would benefit from the new servers, increased bandwidth, etc.

What's the harm in letting a few rich people be dark elves to achieve that? Heck, dark elf masks don't even give you a meaningful vision upgrade on this server ;)

Oops, posted this before seeing Sirken's post. I'm still holding out hope though, just because:

A) I think this server could use more money than the few donations they get (and maybe I'm wrong, having never seen the P99 balance sheet, but I just imagine there's a lot of cost to this operation; server cages aren't cheap)
B) If it works with one kickstarter, why can't it work with another?

Remove early velious plz that's just way too much of an advantage. Keying for ToV ports (CS), freely available legacy pixel camps, getting spells and quest access, the list just goes on and on why that is unfair lol. Not very hard to understand. Everything else, whatever really.

I don't think the devs could go back even if they wanted to, because people have already donated with the expecation of rewards like early Velious. There's no point in fighting it: it's time to embrace the glorious new RMT P99!

Now if someone could just talk to the devs in to benefiting themselves instead of some guy with a terrible track record, we could instead start putting all this RMT money towards the noble cause of helping P99.

Its not freaking RMT P99. Everyone should be stoked on the new game possibly coming out and that we can help to fund it. All the other stuff is just a little side bump. I cant understand why people are not stoked about all of this.

Another thing. This is a free server ran by normal(awesome) people. We chose to put our time and efforts into this game. As far as I'm concerned I've not found a game thats as awesome as EQ in terms of MMORPG and this server, ran by these people, do an amazing job at it. I think because people put so much time into this server that they expect things. The only thing you should expect is this server to keep running.

You totally missed the point of my post; I'm pro-RMT (plus I have no plat to sell). I just think the money is going to the wrong place.

Look, lots of great games operate on the fremium model. Take Ikariam: I started out on it for free, got addicted, and then decided it was worth spending my real life cash to support the game ... especially since I got in-game benefits for doing so. There's nothing wrong with that, and my spending $ helps others play the game for free.

Unless P99 is swamped with money from donations, I see no reason why they shouldn't do the same thing to benefit P99 here. If they can give out stuff to support a kickstarter run by someone else, I see no reason (legally speaking) why they can't do it with their own kickstarter. And I think supporting P99 would be a much better use of the money than supporting Brad, given how his track record compares to Rogean's.
