View Full Version : /who all [some words NEVER work, why?]

Depending on what I am searching for, when I try to do a /who all X, sometimes I will get results, and other times I will just get "There are no players in Everquest who match those filters" even though there totally are players in Everquest who match those filters!
Examples of some that seem to NEVER work:
/who all unreliable
/who all port
/who all porta
(but /who all portas returns Portasaurus)
/who all ear
/who all eart
/who all earth
(but /who all earthr returns Earthra*)
Is there some special reserved-word list that you are not allowed to use in the /who?
*Earthra is not me, just some random person I found whose name seems to be affected by this.

I *THINK* I remember this being a problem on live. But I've been on p99 long enough that my memories of live versus my early days here are starting to kind of melt into one big pond of goo.

By the way, this has been a problem on p99 as long as I've played here/can remember.

It was a little better on live but they've fixed the most aggravating issues. I just remember sometimes names wouldn't work on live, however I do remember class/level combinations working flawlessly.
There was a guy on Prexus called Friendlyarrow or somecrap who always showed up on /who all friends, it was the pits.

I met Portasaurus one day in the sewers, where she introduced me to several rat meat recipes. Since then I've always tried to get in touch for all rat-related news & gossip, but was sad that /who all port never returned a result. I thought she'd quit.
There's another few (druids, naturally) whose names start with "Port", but you're right - /who all port gets me nothing.
I wonder if we have to use underscores or wildcards or something.

I assume it has something to do with hitting search results in the database (outside of players).
For example, a Bazu was a type of mob in GoD so there's a lot of items that start with "Bazu x."
Seems like if you search for names that are items/NPCs/places in the game, they won't return with the player name.

Really sucks for pvp; not really a big deal on pve.

This happens because the client is trying to figure out exactly what you're searching for by comparing it to race or guild names, and then sending those ID's to the server instead of the string.
/who all eath.. there are a lot of race names with earth in the name. (This includes NPC Races).
Not a whole lot we can do about this, other than making the server reject all those player names to begin with... which would block a lot of random things.

Actually I've noticed sometimes LFG works and sometimes it doesn't. I haven't been able to figure out if it breaks after a certain # of logged in individuals, or if someone's name is breaking the /who all lfg search function.
I have noticed that at peak times it tends to not work, but at non peak times it tends to be more reliable.

What confuses me about this, was that I used /who all just fine for quite some time years ago with no issues. Now it's all of a sudden impossible to fix? It just doesn't make much sense.

Then you wonder why in god's name you'd want to interact with Chest and move on to something more productive.
