I remember the first month of EQ release the packetloss being at 30+% and constant disconnects because they overloaded the local internet in San Diego. Maybe we should simulate that along with shitty servers crashing and emergency maintenance? Shit is classic.

That or we could just be thankful we live in 2014 where you can get a cell phone more powerful than SOE was running the original EQ servers on.

But maybe I'm in the minority thinking that trying to emulate a server crash is dum.

the good news is that i stayed up till 4 AM 2 months ago and i got to contest once. i think thats the only time in the past 5 months dragons have been up when i wasn't at work. this server real awesome.

But no you do noting and expect GMs to get dragons for you. That's the thing, they don't want competition. The reality is this EMU has a limited player base to pull from. It's not going to matter.. Nihilum will get nothing done in Velious.. If you thought VP was bad.. wait till Velious... Mob's don't die in 30 seconds anymore. When you need 6+ clerics in a CH rotation.. 1 group of griefers will bring the neckbeards to their knees.

People have biased opinions and everyone has their perspective/agenda on what would be best. As a dominating force Nizzar benefits having things spread out enough to where they can focus 100% on each raid target. I get that. It would still be nice if things moved around for individuals, even if they are tagged Nihilum. That way everyone could have a chance at mobs sooner or later.

The current system just ensures the only people to ever see that content are ones that don't have to work the normal 8-5 jobs. I wouldn't necessarily say it is an advantage/disadvantage to either guild. Both guilds have members that can log on at these times.

Simple solution. Make spawn timers that are not evenly divisible into 24. Instead of having a mob pop every 24 hours, make it pop every 27 hours. Then the spawn will eventually be available at normal hours no matter what time zone you are in. It is also predictable so no poop socking required.

i have a job too sir. lucky for me, the current spawn times work well for me. But that's not the point of my post. RD had 25+ last server reset. With 25 people you can delay us very well even if you won't win the mobs right now. Yet you do not, you haven't even tried to move the respawns. Sorry, but 25 people can't delay 30+ level 60's in VP + max resist gear for more than 5 minutes. Mass PVP lasts about what, 3-4 minutes? VS dies in 15 seconds, and you all have VS faction, so you can have your casters on top of the wall and pin us between the bridge and zone in and rape us in seconds. It wouldn't do anything. Severilous we can try to bard the mob away but it wouldn't do much more than a few minutes max. Trakanon we can move timers back a bit, but is it really worth having a bunch of people who still need gear and are sub 60 waking up @ 9am every day to log into Norrath just to push it back 30 minutes at a time for it to get reset the moment it even gets close to a reasonable time? Talendor you all have OT hammers so we can have no chance at out mobilizing for it. We can't really contest CT because we can't clear the zone fast enough in order to do so. Innoruuk same situation, can't clear it fast enough.

Let's be real, we get about 14-18 people for 6am repops currently compared to your 30+. There's just nothing we can really do to push timers more than 3 to 4 minutes, or anywhere close to the HOURS we would need to push them back to change things, and even if we slowly chipped away at it, there will be a repop way before a 645am VS approaches something like 5PM EST.

I just laugh @ these "play better" posts or "try harder." This is a server that struggles to break 100 concurrent unique players. During the repop today, you had about 34 people. I did a who all and there were 61 online. That means you had over 50% of the online players, most of whom are all 60 with max resist gear and what not. There's no strategy to overcome that. It's just not possible.

There's almost no one left to recruit. The EQ Mac influx is gone. Of the 70+ for two gorenaire attempts, many quit because red99 wasn't for them. Some joined nilly, though not many only 4-5, and many just got burnt out on the server again because there just isn't much you can do to progress your character. I put in way too many hours every week scheduling raids, exp groups, epic fights, sky progression, doing recruiting on both red and blue and other forums. I do everything humanly possible to get people to play, excited about logging in, and trying to gear them and get them ready to compete. The problem is, and will always be, most people who join this server self admittedly would rather app nihilum, get instant pixels with zero difficulty, and then fade away. Most people have no interest in being an under dog and progressing. I can't tell you how many people I've spoken to who just tell me, "sorry I'm a power gamer, I don't want to bother having to work for it." They love the ability to log on twice a week, once for VP and once for repops, and not be bothered the rest of the week.

Some will say this is because Nihilum is an amazing guild, etc. Not really. It's because there's mostly sub 100 pop, no one to recruit, an almost impossible gap to close, etc. If this was a legit server with hundreds of players, there would be multiple guilds. There would still be a "top dog" but Nihilum would never be able to hold down all these mobs with 3+ guilds competing. You'd have one guild mobilizing for trak, another for fay, maybe Nihilum @ VP, another @ talendor, etc. The server would be completely different. Unfortunately, there's only room for two guilds here, and due to the nature of the server, it's near impossible for the second guild to "overtake" the main guild. For some weird reason, people would rather log in week after week to kill mobs they need nothing from, even though the dkp they accumulate is meaningless, to "hold down" those "evil" rebels hell bent on "destroying the server."

Personally, I find it incredibly difficult to wake up for a 7am faydedar or what not, and that's with guildies needing the loot. I could only imagine doing it for dragons that you don't even need loot from, to deny loot that is mostly completely trivial and replaceable with GROUPABLE items in velious. Call me crazy.

In the end, I knew with Red Dawn it's impossible to "win" this server, because there's just too many reallllllly dedicated people in Nihilum to gaining their satisfaction and fulfillment in life through Red99. However, with Velious, it is certainly possible for us to get a number of mobs, make meaningful and fun gains, and have a good time doing so. I've had a lot more fun with our 13 man faydedars, our 17 man Xygoz etc., than I ever did auto attacking fear trash with 60 people in Nihilum all max geared with zero threat of wiping. Kind of like in world of warcraft, the most boring part of an expac is when you have it on farm mode waiting for the next expac. That's when most people peace out. Strangely here, people are content logging on to do that same farm for 2+ years.

So please, keep giving us suggestions on how to contest and what not. I issue a challenge to all these so called masterminds. Make an anonymous alt. Join up. See what life is like on the other side. It's more fun than you would expect, and you can see realistically what this server is like.

I do think though people are asking for a tad bit more of a distribution of repop times though, which I find hard to argue against. I don't disagree with anything you've just said. But this is an emulator for a 14 year old game, and a PVP server to boot. We'll NEVER have the population to create an environment like you've outlined. I think we would all love that, but it isn't going to happen man. No matter what the GMs do, what happens to Nihilum, what rule changes are put in...we'll never have 1000+ people or even 500+. Your best bet at this point is to wait for Nihilum to implode and split into two factions which may or may not ever happen.

I don't think you grasped the context of anything I just posted. It was in response to a player in your guild making a post basically stating "show up and compete and do better." I was merely stating why that isn't a realistic possibility, and why you won't see us bringing 18 people @ 6:30am EST to KC. Also, my enjoyment from the game isn't tied to the denial of others enjoyment, but more to seeing others have a fun time from progressing. Thanks for your comments though for the most part.

I did a who all and there were 61 online. That means you had over 50% of the online players, most of whom are all 60 with max resist gear and what not. There's no strategy to overcome that. It's just not possible.

There's almost no one left to recruit. The EQ Mac influx is gone. Of the 70+ for two gorenaire attempts, many quit because red99 wasn't for them. Some joined nilly, though not many only 4-5, and many just got burnt out on the server again because there just isn't much you can do to progress your character. I put in way too many hours every week scheduling raids, exp groups, epic fights, sky progression, doing recruiting on both red and blue and other forums. I do everything humanly possible to get people to play, excited about logging in, and trying to gear them and get them ready to compete. The problem is, and will always be, most people who join this server self admittedly would rather app nihilum, get instant pixels with zero difficulty, and then fade away. Most people have no interest in being an under dog and progressing. I can't tell you how many people I've spoken to who just tell me, "sorry I'm a power gamer, I don't want to bother having to work for it." They love the ability to log on twice a week, once for VP and once for repops, and not be bothered the rest of the week.

Some will say this is because Nihilum is an amazing guild, etc. Not really. It's because there's mostly sub 100 pop, no one to recruit, an almost impossible gap to close, etc. If this was a legit server with hundreds of players, there would be multiple guilds. There would still be a "top dog" but Nihilum would never be able to hold down all these mobs with 3+ guilds competing. You'd have one guild mobilizing for trak, another for fay, maybe Nihilum @ VP, another @ talendor, etc. The server would be completely different. Unfortunately, there's only room for two guilds here, and due to the nature of the server, it's near impossible for the second guild to "overtake" the main guild. For some weird reason, people would rather log in week after week to kill mobs they need nothing from, even though the dkp they accumulate is meaningless, to "hold down" those "evil" rebels hell bent on "destroying the server."

Personally, I find it incredibly difficult to wake up for a 7am faydedar or what not, and that's with guildies needing the loot. I could only imagine doing it for dragons that you don't even need loot from, to deny loot that is mostly completely trivial and replaceable with GROUPABLE items in velious. Call me crazy.

In the end, I knew with Red Dawn it's impossible to "win" this server, because there's just too many reallllllly dedicated people in Nihilum to gaining their satisfaction and fulfillment in life through Red99. However, with Velious, it is certainly possible for us to get a number of mobs, make meaningful and fun gains, and have a good time doing so. I've had a lot more fun with our 13 man faydedars, our 17 man Xygoz etc., than I ever did auto attacking fear trash with 60 people in Nihilum all max geared with zero threat of wiping. Kind of like in world of warcraft, the most boring part of an expac is when you have it on farm mode waiting for the next expac. That's when most people peace out. Strangely here, people are content logging on to do that same farm for 2+ years.

So please, keep giving us suggestions on how to contest and what not. I issue a challenge to all these so called masterminds. Make an anonymous alt. Join up. See what life is like on the other side. It's more fun than you would expect, and you can see realistically what this server is like.

I'm glad you mentioned this. This is actually not how classic EQ works. Never in the history of EQ did you have months between resets, with all the mobs killed during vampire hours in a 3 hour window week in and week out. I'm glad you believe this is "classic," but as someone who raided in cutting edge end game guilds on Xegony and The Nameless, as well as Guided and took interest in the server I was a Guide on, I can assure you it isn't.

Sorry, but 25 people can't delay 30+ level 60's in VP + max resist gear for more than 5 minutes. Mass PVP lasts about what, 3-4 minutes? VS dies in 15 seconds, and you all have VS faction, so you can have your casters on top of the wall and pin us between the bridge and zone in and rape us in seconds. It wouldn't do anything. Severilous we can try to bard the mob away but it wouldn't do much more than a few minutes max. Trakanon we can move timers back a bit, but is it really worth having a bunch of people who still need gear and are sub 60 waking up @ 9am every day to log into Norrath just to push it back 30 minutes at a time for it to get reset the moment it even gets close to a reasonable time? Talendor you all have OT hammers so we can have no chance at out mobilizing for it. We can't really contest CT because we can't clear the zone fast enough in order to do so. Innoruuk same situation, can't clear it fast enough.

Let's be real, we get about 14-18 people for 6am repops currently compared to your 30+. There's just nothing we can really do to push timers more than 3 to 4 minutes, or anywhere close to the HOURS we would need to push them back to change things, and even if we slowly chipped away at it, there will be a repop way before a 645am VS approaches something like 5PM EST.

I just laugh @ these "play better" posts or "try harder." This is a server that struggles to break 100 concurrent unique players. During the repop today, you had about 34 people. Altering a repop schedule that happened naturally simply so another guild can contest isn't sporting in my opinion. It's easy to say you want competition when you can't compete, but even getting to the point you can contest takes time and effort.

There is a reason blue has 10x the population as red. I've convinced a huge percentage of people on R99 are there because of the exp bonus and nothing else. They think they'll be able to avoid PVP somehow. When it becomes difficult they quit or join the easy path. There will always be an easier path, and because the majority will flow in that direction it will never change. Even if you split Nihilum in two and pitted those guilds against each other, one would become victorious in fairly short order and you'd end up in the same situation. As long as one guild is capable of clearing all top tier raid content on the same day it respawns this situation will not change.

Velious is really the only hope to build a second guild. None of what we're talking about in this thread or anywhere else - variance, PNP, repop times, random simulated server resets, etc will make a dent in what you are defining as the problem. Until there is more stuff to do then one guild can accomplish.

All that being said, I don't see the harm in doing the simulated server restarts during prime time only. Changing the entire repop schedule is way too much, but throwing a few spawns out there to see what happens wouldn't be a bad idea.

If R99 raid content is still popping at 4am when/if DAOC origins gets their sploits patched, it won't be much of a contest.

Actually, I would argue simulated repops WOULD be a positive change. Each piece of gear that Red Dawn gets has a monumentally larger impact than each piece of gear that Nihilum gets. This is because for the most part, the gear farmed by Nihilum goes to alts or rots, whereas the gear obtained by Red Dawn is worn. ANY fight an underdog wins is a HUGE morale boost, whereas it's "business as usual," with Nihilum. Even if repops meant Red Dawn were to get only 2 or 3 of the mobs, it would have a huge impact. People are willing to be part of an underdog if they believe they have a chance, no matter how small or large, at pixels. If they see it as an impossibility, they either quit / join nihilum.

The only opportunity RD has to contest at this point is if it happens during a perfect prime time window where you guys can get 50+ in the zone. Would you disagree with that? You guys had your shot at repops like twice now when the server reset and nihilum wasn't on the ball and you guys could have easily had a good head start but you didn't take advantage of the situation. As Agatha said it already it doesn't matter if variance is added or not, you would not be able to cut it. EQ is from 1999 and to here will still be a poopsock neckbearding game. You have a job, Cant make a 3am, 6am, 9am raid? Well that sucks for you, People back in 99-current COULDNT DO THAT EITHER only some could. The fact is you have more of those hardcore neckbeard players bottled up playing on one server then any of the EQlive PVP servers EVER did.

I get that you're incredibly butt hurt by the actions of a few individuals. However, we still regularly have close to 50 people for our scheduled nightly raids. Lite barely plays. No one has been "toxic." You talk about loot and what not, but yet 90% of all loot has gone to Red Dawn players, though there is no real distinction anymore as we have merged under one flag. We're all on the same team. Those who are playing are committed to our team, and understand we're only as strong as our weakest player. I get that you like to embellish and fabricate agatha stories for enjoyment, but there really is not an ounce of truth to anything you stated. I control the DKP system, the website, the scheduling of raids, administration of guild such as who is invited or booted, etc., etc. The buck stops with me. You guys had your shot at repops like twice now when the server reset and nihilum wasn't on the ball and you guys could have easily had a good head start but you didn't take advantage of the situation. As Agatha said it already it doesn't matter if variance is added or not, you would not be able to cut it. EQ is from 1999 and to here will still be a poopsock neckbearding game. You have a job, Cant make a 3am, 6am, 9am raid? Well that sucks for you, People back in 99-current COULDNT DO THAT EITHER only some could. The fact is you have more of those hardcore neckbeard players bottled up playing on one server then any of the EQlive PVP servers EVER did.

Go play World of Warcraft or some instanced game where you guys can have your saturday afternoon instanced raids where you all have time off from work or RL/family obligations. This is as classic as it gets, neckbeards who can login whenever/wherever get it done.

I GREATLY disagree with your 250 pop assessment. If anything, red may dip even further as people flock to blue. On blue, there's plenty of content to satiate a shit load of players in Velious. On red, all it takes is one group with faction to completely cock block and shit on people farming Kael arena / halls of testing, etc., etc. The massive amounts of grief possible in Velious will scare off all but the most bearded of necks.

That is a good thing. Mobs were on rotations and you just competed to get the mobs that popped during your playtime. If there was a server crash or reset during a time you could log in you would compete once server came back up. It is good for mobs to sometimes spawn at 6 am, so euros get a chance. For the repops to always be at 6 am is dumb. It was never like this on live and doesn't make sense to make a system like that here.

15% of 40 (rough estimate on raid targets) is a lot more than 0% of 20 (or however many raid targets there are now).

Plus there is a TON of 2 group type shit. Plus a ton of quests that give good gear. Also, Kunark will be more open outside of VP, and maybe even VP will be open sometimes.

Unfortunately, a lot of the "2 group shit" such as skyshrine armor, etc., will likely be perma locked down for the first six months of Velious. I get what you're saying, but I think it's GREATLY overstated the amount of content opened up to tier 2 guilds in Velious.

I can’t log in at 6am EST, or usually any sooner than 4PM CST during the weekdays. I would love to wake up and raid if I didn’t work but I have a job that requires me to be in a respectable state of mind when I show up in the morning. Would be nice to see the repop happen at an hour where some of us can actually show up and compete for the dragons.

Currently I am never online for any of the spawns. I wake up and see bat phone messages for dragons but I can’t log in to do it. It’s sad bros, I don’t think I have ever even seen pvp over innoruuk/severilous/VS the entire 2 and a half years of my on and off playing here. The server should be about PVP, whether RD wins the mob or not. Some of us just want to be able to show up and be a part of large scale PVP.

I get it though, Nihilum favors having mobs at uncontested hours because there is 0% risk of losing the mob to pvp. Smart tactic sure. For the sake of PVP I would like to see things spawning at more reasonable hour but know it probably won’t happen.

The fix is trivial, have static spawn timers that do not align with 24 hour days (27 hours for instance). It isn't variance, you know exactly when it will spawn, but it would prevent mobs from being locked up at 4am for months at a time.

DAOC has content to fight over 24/7. DAOC Origins has a 1500 population. R99 has content to fight over for 3 hours at 4am every 3-5 days. R99 has 150 people. R99 only has 80 when there is actually something to fight over.

Pretty accurate statement. Some of the most fun I've had were the large scale pvp battles over content, even if my side lost. Unfortunately, the system is currently set up in a way that discourages these battles from occurring. Telling people who have jobs to "man up" and quit their gainful employment to take part in this, is pretty ludicrous.

Simple solution. Make spawn timers that are not evenly divisible into 24. Instead of having a mob pop every 24 hours, make it pop every 27 hours. Then the spawn will eventually be available at normal hours no matter what time zone you are in. It is also predictable so no poop socking required.

I know this may seem revolutionary to you, but for most of us, it takes advance preparation to be able to sacrifice our mornings for 2-3 hours for Norrath. It's not feasible, at least for my guild, to wake up on a daily basis at these hours for contesting mobs. We tried a trakanon, and saw that our chance of success was incredibly low, if non-existent. It's not possible / worthwhile, burning people out and having them call in sick to work [which some did] on a daily basis where there is a slim to none chance of success. However, we have no problem doing so at prime time, which you have seen on a daily basis with Ragefire.

The argument for a simulated reset is that classic had server resets all the time, spreading out the competition throughout the day and therefor allowing players from all time zones and lifestyles to participate in PvE/PvP content. Yeah actually I did raid in the mornings, my guild I played in blue was a euro guild so I had to be online at their times. On red I didn't get to raid the things I could on blue mostly because I never made it high level i just pvp'd. That didn't stop the euros from logging in on nightly EST times to try and get mobs during THEIR morning times.

I can put a lot of time into EQ if I so choose, however it is the rare day when I can log in at 6am EST to play EQ (and both of my RL friends are in the same boat). As long as the end game content is always done at this time, I will miss out on most of it. It isn't any big deal in the scheme of things, after all there are many alternatives to EQ EMU out there.

Nihilum for sure wants uncontested content. Each PvP fight means more work for the GMs so I am not surprised that they don't want the spawn times to shift. I gave Azrael everything I had even when we were losing. One of the guilds main issues was getting mobilized, So trying to say its one persons fault again is just pitifully sad. Anyone who actually played during that time knows what it took to actually GET PEOPLE to the raid, Multiple port trips for 1-2 people at a time for an hour straight on portahoe/cheeseycakes all over the world logging in at different times not being on time.

I don't even know what your post was trying to accomplish, I wasn't one of those people who threatened to app nihilum or leave the guild everytime I didn't get my way, of which Azrael had no shortage of at the time and they all had to be kept happy with loot or exp or something so they didn't rage 24/7 or not show up when we needed them the most.

I appreciate your desire to PVP, but this game was never built and will never be a great PVP game. Too much of your ability to kill another player is dependent on gear...be it a better weapon to hack down your opponent or better resist gear to not get nearly gibbed by a single wizard nuke.

When we were in heavy discussion on teams I suggested PVP gear sets obtainable by some sort of SZ style token mechanism. Kill players, get tokens, use tokens to buy PVP centric items that can be looted by other players when you get PK'd. Unless something like that gets added you can't have the PVP without the PVE.

This point of view is so sad and pathetic. Whether you want to PvP or PvE the end game at level 60 is going to be centered around these mobs that are currently spawning at 6 am. I understand making fun of people for whining about PvP happening but this thread was just about making the end game during normal hours so people could enjoy it.

It would just be more fun to have stuff going on while the majority of the players were online. Saying groups of 50 people should sit around at 6 am and try to push back mobs 12-15 hours over weeks or possibly months to finally get the content to spawn when normal people play is insane.

Having mobs spawn at 6 am isn't unfair, it just isn't fun. I don't think people on either side enjoy it so I don't get why there is even an argument about it.

If Nihilum left them up, Red Dawn would kill them and claim victory. Red Dawn would talk a lot of shit because they got the mob. Point is, if the mob is up, someone is going to kill it. The reason you want mobs in the 5pm EST + hours is because you can get 80 people to log on.

Playing during the week isn't an option for me during the day. I have to go to work. I get 3 weeks vacation and I'm spending it in Thailand, a wedding in July and family stuff, not to push dragons on a video game.

When I log in I'm down for whatever, will PvP, not grief, not be bothered by grief myself, but I will say it would be nice if the game I played had end game content when I was on.

I'm not saying it isn't possible for people to dedicate their lives to moving spawn timers on this game. I'm just saying the way it is makes this current server boring at end game. If you don't get that then you are too immersed.

i didnt know "fun" had anything to do with everquest dragons. if more players are there, is it more or less "fun"? if 80 red dawn showed up because it was 11 am instead of 6 am, would it be 80x as fun? is there a cap where more players attending make it less "fun"? im trying to understand this, i didn't know zerglings cared about "fun"

You're in a guild with a guy who posts peoples #'s on craigslist / deleted chars, another guy banned for deleting chars, ANOTHER guy banned for deleting chars, a guy who stole items from a dead person, a couple of toxic druggies, several RMT'ers, etc., etc. 95% of this server is scum all around, so let's stop playing the "your guild is toxic game."

You don't have to be banned or suspended to be a toxic player. You just have to piss of the GMs for that. I wouldn't say I am a toxic player and I'm sure any non troll would agree. But I was banned because I pissed off the staff. February so close. Can't wait.

hey GMs, is it possible to create instance versions of raid zones in everquest? i know raids became instances in POP and later (potime was instance i believe).

i really think this would be extremely helpful and help us avoid this whole 7 day repop thing, where repops happen on euro time. this way, everyone gets dragons and there gear, etc etc. and then we can also pvp over world bosses, so some guilds get double the dragons because they fought over the open world raid targets as well.

instance versions (RAIDS ONLY) will definitely help this server, and even something you can make on blue with all the crazyness going on there.

EQ2 was the best game to utilize this, starting with Echos of Faydark [the best EQ2 expac when Scott Hartman took over or w/e his name was]. They had instanced raids, but they also had world raid mob versions of the bosses with better loot, and then completely random variance spawn "Avatars" that had the best loot in the game. Was a shit ton of fun, you had the static spawns you would pvp over, variance that tested bat phone, and still a ton of instanced content to satiate you. Unfortunately, the next expansion sucked and they never revamped combat like they promised to, but I feel they had the way content should be done right with that expac.
