Most text shows up as boxes

I know I'm probably an idiot who didn't read the instructions right, but I tried very hard to follow them, and I've done about 20 forum searches but didn't see this issue anywhere on the forum.

Most of my text shows up as boxes. I've tried changing the resolution, the font, and tried it in both windowed and fullscreen, but the problem persists.
