I've not been able to log on for the last hour or so. I was logged in about 11 pm, intended to log out to fix resolution issues from main options menu and havent been able to relog since. Getting kicked back to the login screen after selecting my server and clicking "Play Everquest" and getting Error 1017 whenever I login following a boot to the login screen

"cannot login to the everquest server. You may need to re-run the update patch, Repeatedly seeing this message indicates a loss of connectivity to thepatch server. This is usually temporary."

Is this because thje server cant handle over 1000 people? I see thenumber of players is over 1000.

Thank you for the heads up on this. It started working again around 2 am last night. itworked following a system reboot. Not sure if this fixed or if it was more that there were a lot of people that logged off around that time?

Im going to try thge reccomended stuff (Going to restart now, even though I JUST turned my PC on, been at work all day) from that FAQ, but being that it is not a consistent problem (seems to only occur at peak hours with server pop of 950+) im imagining there's little following these steps will do to alleviate it.. It really seems like it's because the high population

Edit:

Well, I've rebooted my router and my computer and still no dice. I am almost certain it's the high population. I was however unaware of the sticky dedicated to this topic, I apologize.

Edit again:

No, actually I revoke that apology, it appears the thread dedicated to the subject is closed and in no way relevant. So, is this a known thing, the server struggling to let on around 1000 people? Really sucks that I can only play when no one is on :(

Moar edit:

I've successfully patched and connected to PEQ The Grand Creation as well as P99 Red, successfuly isolating the issue and confirming that nothing in that faq will fix it.

And I regularly get error 1017 during these times, and no other times, no other servers. The only possible thing I could imagine is that i'd have to use a different port than usual because of the high population-- should I just go witht he range of 6000-7000 as reccomended (not confidently, I might add) by the FAQ?

doubtful. all my ports are closed but 5998 and doesnt matter what the pop is i can get in. Maybe it has something to do with your service. If 1k on EQ its probably a primetime and your internet service might be throttled around those times. Really the only thing i can think of. Other people dont see to have this problem as it is not posted regularly.

Very stange turn of events, thought I had this licked. After checking for connectivity to p99 red, and PEQ I decided to try opening the port range specified. After doing so I reloaded eqemu and selected p99, when it was ready I launched eq and actually got to character select. However it was the missing spell file error screen, so I manually downloaded the patch files and upon trying to connect after updating it's doing the same thing it was doing previously.

My network speed is not the issue. I tested by launching steam, download speeds reached 2.0 Mb/s within a few seconds of beginning download.

Speedtest.net is reporting 5 Mb/s down, 1.07 up.. So I doubt throttling is the issue.

It seems to be getting weirder. After repatching I continued to get the 1017 error, however after rebooting it appear as though it were going to connecti, however I got a "memory cannot be read" error. I messed around with the resolution and rebooted my computer yet again, and I am now getting timneouts and "unknown errors".. it's literally saying an unknown error has occured while trying to connect x_x

I believe the thing causing the "memory could not be read" error, is the fact that it's launching in full screen mode-- Even if I exit full screen, when it goes to change to the loading screen it goes back in and out of ufll screen twice, then gives me the application error.

Attempting to change fullscreen setting via Duxa's all-in-one as a possible solution.

Rerunning Duxa's all-in-one to change the resolution seems to have addressed the most recent issue .

So, after a port forawrding, a repatch, a reboot, and changing the windowed mode status im up and running and it's 10 pm-- thanks for the assistance everyone.

I linked it because it had some data in it. Your post here is relevant regardless of that thread, just thought it might have a solution for you.

Sadly it is doing it again. 5:30 pm on a sunday, when the population # has reached over 900

Yesterday the 29th. I began having this problem. It happened when the server was over 1000 pop. And lasted about a hour.
I was DCed from the server then unable to log back in.
Then this morning. The pop is under 600. I was Dced and have not been able to log back in for 30 mins now. I began checking some of the things you mentioned and downloaded 1 new mobo driver.
Still from any account, I get that Error 1017.

I opened Port 5998, and cleared DNS.
It allowed me to connect again.
