Why are there so many manastones for sale?

I have basically been unable to play lately. But a couple weeks back I invested in a manastone for 235k. Some are being sold for less than 200 now! I don't care about that loss, but when I look at ec forums and the eqauctions website there are just tons of them for sale, and I am wondering what has caused this sudden increase in stones for sale and decrease in value.

Maybe there are more in game than I thought, and I will not be selling mine, but is there something going on??

Because everyone knew what a manastone was before this server even went live (unlike in actual live during that time) and everyone and their dog farmed one. And I doubt they ever get destroyed.

Always have been a ton of them on this server. As for them selling a lot more, I'm not sure. People quitting, no more player auctions to make tons of money, lots of people having zero use for them,.. not really sure.

I'm not arguing against the possibility of duping. However, has anybody considered that a lot of people are coming back to play on Velious? I know of at least 2 people I've grouped with recently who just started playing again and haven't played since classic that said the whole reason they started playing on this server originally was for Velious.

Another thing to consider is that with every expansion a manastone's use usefulness does tend to go down since you have more non-classic zones. I'm not saying that it isn't useful, but not every class and just port back to classic zones real fast to get some mana. Of course, maybe 200k is a great investment to do ghetto powerleveling in classic zones, I don't know.

I'm more inclined to believe that people are liquidating funds to get ready for velious. Kunark/classic era gear will probably lose some value after launch and raw plat will be better than a bunch of gear. Though I doubt manastones will lose value.

I know for a fact he has sold multiple manastones already. The manastone is a low volume item. If one or two people come back from 'the old days' and say 5 enter the market at once, voila, the price crashes. If you wait enough it will revert. The AoN for example is back to 400+. People had all those theories and the attacks turned out to be Toop being an ass.

Of course it is possible that it is being duped as well, but based on the evidence we have this is certainly the less likely possibility. The fact that you are sure simply shows your inability to evaluate uncertain events.

I traded for mine with about 180k worth of stuff to Whisk from IB. However I know the person who bought a manastone for 150k. After he bought it, the same exact person began to auction another one.

I'm not familiar with the eq-emu DB schema, but shouldn't it just require Rogean to run a simple SQL statement to determine if the manastone is being duped. I mean it doesn't drop so if the quantity increases then we have a dupe.

Unless there's no quantity increase at the item record DB level because the duplicated items are pulling from the same DB record. I.e. on 1/1/2011, Item_001 dropped and created a line with a unique identifier of 123456. That item is then duplicated so that multiple characters now have an instance of Item_001 with identifier 123456. The DB only has one record of one item being created, but two characters have the ability to use it.

I've seen this happen in point-of-sale systems where duplicate sales records are created that reference the same inventory item with a unique serial number. Your dollar amounts of sales are up because two sales exist for the exact same item, but at the inventory DB level it looks like just one of those items went out the door.

illusionz i know this may come to a shock to you, but i myself at one point had ~10 manastones, and friends of mine had more than that banked. there are people with similar inventories that just haven't logged on since early - mid 2010. it really wouldn't be so surprising if one of those players came back and wanted to make an alt to level up for velious, but didn't feel like sitting around EC / forums for a week trying to get rid of them for what you perceive to be their value.

Easy to accumulate mana stones when you afk track bilge for pkts using 3rd party programs. I would imagine a few were bought for cash too based on your storied past.
