Hey all,

I keep seeing threads following these two tangents:

"Nihilum keeps absorbing players left and right, the server is hopeless!"

Or...

"Man, the server is sure awesome again because there's regularly 150 people on at primetime."

My question is: Is the server any fun? I haven't really PVP'd too much as this is my only character on the box I used to play all the time. I've been killed at low HP many times because Shaman Canni. I'm not gonna look forward to grabbing Bane, Pox, or Torpor - that shit will be like selling one of my kidneys or my car or somethin'.

I might log in if the server's fun.

The problem is that Azrael started to contest again once I left Nihilum. Server got patched and Nizzar was afraid we would continue contesting so now they raid at 6am on Tuesday and then recruit people they don't need, just to have 45 people on a Trakanon raid. I don't think its smart for 25 people in non raid loot to contest 45 people dripping with Nizzar's pixel showers. Basically, join, have fun how you want to, #thrive. Play solo, Join Azrael, Join Nihilum, whatever you want. I just log in to farm stuff to sell for discounted prices to Azrael. I raid to help Azrael gear up, not for dkp. Then I level up a warrior on blue so I can afk grind.

I started during the summer and casually solo'd / found friends to group with, but when the server pop. started going down, I felt it wasn't worth the time to log in.

Red99 is what it is and likely will never grow beyond that. It's effectively a one guild server for end game content. There's a lot of finger pointing for why that is, some blame nihilum,
some the competition, some the staff, some the rules, some all of the above. If you're in nihilum you'll get gear, down dragons with little to no effort 99.9% of the time and do so until you burn out unless you're a neckbeard. If you join the opposition you'll likely bang your head against the wall accomplishing little. If you choose to just go FFA no allegiance you'll find little world pvp worth playing significant time here for. Every several months there's a one to two week period of mass pvp and excitement which usually quickly dies off.

Is the server fun? Sure, there's fun to be had and in a MMO you ultimately make your own fun. But I think few would honestly dispute that this server is even close to living up to the potential of an eq pvp server, which is why many look toward teams99 currently.

My advice? If you're here to relive end game content , give it a shot roll up and join nihilum. If you're here for the journey? Join blue. Here for exciting pvp? Wait till teams99.

You have to separate end game from the journey to that point. My post is directed at the end game scene of red99. I think the initial play through can be fun, though if this is your first return to eq after a long layoff, I think blue might provide a more enjoyable experience of nostalgia.

Prior to the announcement, r99 was peaking in the 200s on a daily basis for the first time ever. Its taken months and talks of velious to restore hope to the playerbase. Teams really offers nothing other than another server where the neckbeards will have an even greater advantage when they will roll 3+ characters, one for each team to dominate the competition as they would on an FFA server. Sure, it will be fun at first, but it will ultimately dry up soon as players get leveled up and find a lack of contested content to pvp over. With velious on both blue and red, teams99 would be destined for failure if launched prior to the completion of Velious content on both servers.

Pretty much the worst thing you could do is search for answers on these forums. Those who dwell here make up about 25% of the people that actually play, and 20% of those players are disgruntled members of the losing team or has-beens from a bygone era of internet gaming.

Log in, have fun and send tells to a few random members of Nihilum, Azrael and other smaller guilds for a more accurate survey.

Lol where do you get these stats and numbers? we had 150 peak when teams was announced, the same as it has been since I started playing here in 2012. The only time the server touched 200 people this year was during blue down time.

I only recently decided to make a toon on Red for the change of pace. I will say it's been more enjoyable than blue has for a long time.

I think a big part of the Red experience is what you bring with you. I was here early on in the project when blue had similar population and problems. I don't expect Red to become the next p99 server to reach 900+ population. I went first-toon melee just as a challenge, and get rolled constantly by the endless supply of mid-level twinks. But regardless, it's been fun, I'm getting some experience with PvP, and I'll ride this momentum into teams99. So Red is worth the time in my opinion.

Not to mention SOMETHING will happen with these Red toons down the line. Whether it's getting rolled into teams, or a naked transfer to a server of choice, or even that slim chance that Red will beat out teams in battle for who has the most population. So it's not like playing here is a waste, you'll get to keep the toon one way or another.

Only 2 of my banned characters were 60, and they were all banned for a single offense: deleting a players character who stole multiple characters, stripped characters and deleted a character and then got off scott free while cashing in with RMT and posting our entire guilds personal info on the forums.

The server is not as bad as the trolls make it out to be, all those that quit playing saying the server would be dead in months after they left and now they do all they can on the forums to make it come true(spending more hours on the forum than they did ingame before).

Its also not as good as it could ve been. But there is still life on the server. And we do in fact often have over 150 online on primetime, and 40-60 off peak. Then again this monday morning we were down to 23, so its not ideal yet.

A shaman solos pretty well, so go ahead and give it a shot. Maybe Velious will spawn soonish.

As far as being hated or being too srs about R99, I'm far from it. Mostly I solo'd for a bit, then made friends & grouped later on. I didn't actively search for PvP, it just sort of found me several times when I was at a disadvantage (Canni down is dangerous, yo.)

I started on red as a level 1 dark elf cleric in cloth which I kept up for a few months, got my ass handed to me all day by holocaust people and still had fun. Led <Brotherhood> for a long time handing out mega amounts of pixel packages to a majority of people that just left for holocaust or nihilum to raid right away yet still managed to develop a very close knit group of pals that played together every day (rip znif/vladimir/bemad/gunnagetcha/aukshen/velor/smith/bamor/moses/keister/rutaq etc etc). Lol even raised Lite when he was a newb bard.. So not sure what youre going at with started at max level with good pixels since day 1.

I'm looking at 1 more month to 60 and I still wont have an epic or fuckin jboots. Fact is, Azrael wont group me unless I'm working on my epic and fighting Nihilum. Nihilum is the enemy. And everyone else is just permanently in their 50's, casual, or pvp only.

I'de be more than happy to forgoe my epic, and just find xp groups and fight Nihilum. But thats never going to be in the cards.

I tried this, <Neriak Strip Club> isn't going to happen. <Knights of Ni> are way to blue for me. I don't have the energy to dedicate to pling noobs so they can join Nihilum.

I wouldnt even need to loot or progess to pvp, but there are no pvp groups either. No sow, no support, no heals. It's a fucking wasteland unless your raiding or farming pixels for the server elites.

But yeah IDK man I have 0 epics 0 intention of camping them any time soon even though enchanter/monk/cleric epics are easy as fuck and I still accomplish tons of crap in azrael... If you're so concerned with a wizard epic I have no clue why you're unwilling to get a rogue epic, it makes no sense. FOH is the wrong guild for most things as they have no real leadership or goals outside of cheesy grief kills.. It's easy to get to 60, it's not easy but it's certainly not /that/ hard to make your own guild if you actually put effort into it and if you cant handle some percentage of the community hacking or exploiting or betraying you then all I can say is that no MMOs are for you.

I joined <NSC> on my lowbie wizard and didn't really see any effort into doing anything there... You surely don't have to waste your time powerleveling people just grouping and helping. That's what I did.

I recently gave up on this prject after having played since release. Do yourself a favor and don't play here. You're either going to spend months soloing to 60 to find that the end game on this server is awful or you're going to spend months getting to 52 and find that you are getting griefed so hard that you can't even make it to 60. The only thing waiting for you at 60 is team speaks full of people who drop N bombs like it is their life goal and people petitioning each other and crying.

If you want to play on a server where eventually people will hate you for the rest of their lives then maybe you should play here. Otherwise spend your time elsewhere.

If what you want is the endgame and raiding, why the hell are you even on an emulated server? I've raided almost every event in EQ for the first 15 expansions and this era isn't even close to being the most difficult or entertaining.

I play because I enjoy the game of EQ. I pretty much guarantee I get more enjoyment out of helping newbies and giving out free gear than most people do from pvp and raiding.

Find something to play for that isn't loot or pvp kills, you'll be happier for it.

Chewie, just from /ooc and walking past these guys in game I can tell they are horrible people. They created that guild Union to troll and are behind 99% of the griefing and RMT on the server.

Bazia/basiah don't care about noobs. These guys are in the business of headhunting and working with people like Masaka.

I'm pretty sure Greegon came to this box since day 1 with the intention of working with this little ring of theirs. It's way bigger than Nihilum. Nihilum is just the organized and clean part. These other guys are like the MAFIA, and why I am totally blacklisted on the server.

Watch out for that other guy Drakar who pretends to be a huge bluebie, he's in with it too. I'm pretty sure its why they are so opposed to item loot.

On the other hand I sat down with noobs and played with em. Bound their wounds. Gave them pro tips on were to level and get loot. Handed out spell money on the daily (well I did). I try to connect with people and talk to them. Guide them in the right direction.

These guys just want to guide people into their little 2 or 3 man farming groups and keep it on the down low. Every time you see a new level 1 twink appear and get pl'd to 20 + in BIS gear its these guys who are responsible. Along with their pals in Nihilum. These guys just serve the LoZ, VZ/TZ crowd. While Nihilum handles blue server transferee's.

And of course they play it off like they found some long lost RZer or pro newbie to bring up into the ranks. In reality they just run a pixel chain gang.

You "never" see me in YT because I never pvp. I have not killed anyone with any character. I see no purpose in it. I have nothing to prove nor will killing someone make me feel better in any way.

As to why I use dialup, I live in a deadzone in Texas. I've always used it, even on live. The TT thing wasn't even a problem on Blue.

For anything else, think what you want. It's kind of amusing. You're poor and griefed because you chose a rogue. Melee first is a bad idea on eq unless you have friends, and rogue is probably the absolute worst choice.

I know it's fucked up, but I don't like EQ pvp, I just like not having a list of 12 people ahead of me for a camp 24/7. I came from Blue because my RL friend and longtime friend from live switched over.
It's not like I won't defend myself, I just think the class balance is fucking terrible and the extremes people go to over it is beyond me. Riley is my real life friend and it's impossible to even attempt to explain my objective view because he interrupts me to rant about nihilum EVERY single time.

It really is just a game to me. Plat isn't real, my character dying does not injure me. So I don't kill people when I am capable, is that really crazy? I am fully capable of killing people in real life but I do not.

As for the seafuries, I want a goddamn fungi tunic and have been farming the shit out of them so I could buy one. I can't get to Sebilis to camp one. I have killed seafuries on every character I have because I have to buy everything I cannot solo. The shaman spells from Kunark for Cidisius were over 130k and I still don't have a couple of them.

You too? I'm not together, and my internet is shit till next week, You'll see me a lot more in random places after I can zone reliably. Why in rathe for 3 weeks? I'm middle class, oot is for the bad asses, and the pvp in rathe is pretty good. I'd rather log into one zone where I can make cash, get some pvp and vendor all in one. Zoning literally can take me up to an hour or more. This happens about 75% of the time. And the money is good, pixles acquired since I hit rathe: wurm coat, jac rings, jboots, fbss, mith arms/legs, EoE, froggy crown and selo's drums. Lemonade :D

edit: oh and I wasn't always 52, started there at 39 and never left. 52 Just taking longer because I ate 3-4 exp deaths and spent a good amount of time pling some friends and grouping with other rathe locals. Had fun this whole time.
