Looking for a new good show to watch. Listed above are some I havent seen yet or suggest a good one. As far as my taste my favorites are your standard The Wire/Sopranos/Breaking Bad/Boardwalk Empire/Game of Thrones type of stuff.

Poll added with some of the options im currently weighing.. Will set the DVR for Dracula. As far as Samwise, most of it, for sure. But plenty of shows that are just amazing storytelling and great characters. Dont think anyone can dawg on the Sopanos for example.

Surprisingly, you're getting some solid suggestions here. If it's on HBO, Showtime, AMC, or FX it's worth a look. Carnivale was an awesome, albeit short-lived (two seasons) series on HBO. Still one of my favorites.

But if you've got a Netflix subscription, you can get on right now and set yourself up with The Walking Dead, Sons of Anarchy, and Hell on Wheels to keep you busy for a while. I think someone even suggested those exact three already.

If you're into SciFi

Star Trek (I've included a recommended starter episode in each series)

Star Trek: The Original Series (not even joking)
for nostalgia, background, and more
-- episode: the city on the edge of forever, shore leave, trouble with tribbles, the corbomite maneuver

Star Trek: The Next Generation
for philosophy, strategy, dialogue, introspection, and idealism
-- episode: lower decks, first contact, the inner light

Star Trek: Deep Space 9
for politics, seediness, backstabbing, reality, camaraderie, and lies (oh and lots of mirror . . heh) - and s38!
-- episode: the visitor, progress [the episode that gave my druid his name!]

Star Trek: Voyager
[precursor: the doctor is the best part of this series]
for technobabble, captain overmanagement, the worst vulcan, and a retarded crew
-- episode: death wish

Star Trek: Enterprise (better than people say it is, especially end of season 1 to the end of season 2)
[ugh time war]
for a crew made of plastic and hollywood, modern sparklies, shiny sets, and a true-to-form imagining of pre-kirk star trek
-- episode: the andorian incident, dear doctor, carbon creek, dead stop

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Firefly (obviously)
-- only 14 eps, extremely immersive, starts up quick

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Battle Star Galactica (all along the watch towers!)
-- one of the most intense and interesting first episodes in a series i've ever seen

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i rank Deadwood right up behind the wire and the sopranos, and i generally am not a fan of the setting, but deadwood ascends above it's genre imo, and HBO did not fail to deliver. show was cut short (and u feel it in season 3) because the stupid ass creator (David Milch) abandoned the show to work on his failure of a dream show called "John from Cincinnati".

also, it wasnt on your list, but check out "Vikings"

Sons of Anarchy is a few seasons deep and may be a pita to catch up on, but its a another show i watch weekly.

and if you havent seen Archer, stop what you're doing and watch it right now

I hope it picks back up cuz it sucks now.

I agree. Season 1 was great, so was season 2 (prequel). Unfortunately the actor that played Spartacus died at the end of season 1, and the new Spartacus in season 3 & 4 wasn't nearly as good imo. Still a good series.

Also Rome was really good. I liked it more than Spartacus.

If you have netflix The IT Crowd (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_IT_Crowd), House of Cards, and Come Fly with Me (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Come_Fly_with_Me_%282010_TV_series%29) are all pretty good.

Finally, I have a love-hate relationship with the West Wing. At times it is amazing, followed by 1-6 episodes of boring.

This. I wish there was more survival, IE leaving that prison, its just gotten boring being at the same spot for 2 years. I literally cant watch 10 mins of this show anymore. Definately is shit now. All drama about kids and love story. No good action.

American Horror Story is pretty cool, the latest season is kind of lame though, its about witches or something? idk

Sherlock (BBC version, with Spock from the new Star Trek movies). It's not setup like a normal show, the seasons are 3 "episodes" that are like 2 hours long. But it's really good.

Weeds is solid, but no Breaking Bad by any stretch of the imagination.

Deadwood was absolutely fantastic, too bad it had to end when it did. Rome solid also, but I liked Spartacus better after season 1.

If you like comedy I enjoy Parks and Rec, Community, South Park, Eastbound and Down.

True Blood was pretty good last season and the first couple, middle seasons sucked.

I'm starting to find Walking Dead a little too bleak. It's like you're just waiting for every character to die in some horrific fashion, which I guess is kind of the point of the show but it wears on you after awhile.

It's kind of the same reason I got sick of 24 after awhile, it was just constantly too intense like staring at a bright light for too long...just gave me a headache.

Lost was awesome season 1 and took a dump from there, and had one of the most retarded endings/plot twists ever. Same deal with Heroes - awesome first season and shit the bed afterwards.

Ghost Hunters (since its halloween)

Doctor Who, ofc.

Terra Nova ( same case as firefly)

House and The League were two others mentioned that are worth checking out! Sherlock from the BBC is in the same vein as house, but I think better written. The League is A+ if you are into fantasy football and B+ if you're not. I know it's campy as hell but I actually enjoyed Merlin (another BBC show) especially the last season.

Another good one you may enjoy on Netflix is Legend of the Seeker. Absolutely horrible TV show if you've read the books, but if you haven't read the Sword of Truth series the shows pretty good on action.

I actually like Boardwalk Empire better than the Sopranos. Sort of a similar underlying theme (crime family drama) but in a lot of ways this is a story about the origins of organized crime - like nationally organized. If you don't mind some slight spoilers, reading about some of the characters who were real people and how things went for them in real life gives you a new perspective to a lot of the interactions in the show.

Just the whole prohibition era is more interesting for a show like this than modern day like The Sopranos.

Hands down, Gyp Rosetti from Boardwalk was one of the coolest villain characters in a show ever. As far as comparing it to the Sopranos, I dunno. The Sopranos had a completely different intent as a show than Boardwalk. Both are brilliant in my book.
