View Full Version : Sick of constant thunder? Here's how to change it.

I got sick of headache-inducing thunderclaps every 5-6 seconds so I found out how to change the files.

Step 1: Download S3DSpy 1.2 (http://sourceforge.net/projects/eqemulator/files/OpenZone/S3DSpy%201.2/S3DSpy_1.2.zip/download). EverQuest bundles visual elements into .s3d files, sounds into .pfs files.

Step 2: Extract and run S3DSpy, point it to your EverQuest folder. You'll see a list of files on the left.

Step 3: Find snd2.pfs, thunder1.wav and thunder2.wav will be on the list on the right. You can either delete the files and leave it at that, or swap them out with softer thunder, duck quacks, whatever you want. Just make sure the filenames are the same.

Step 4: /quit and come back.

In the words of Depeche Mode, enjoy the silence.

Another sound that annoys me is the "wind tunnel" effect in certain zones. It's just too freakin' loud. You can tweak those in snd6.pfs, files are wind_lp2.wav, wind_lp3.wav, and wind_lp4.wav.

Likewise - for future use. Is the 'quest turn in' sound able to be toned down too? I guess I'll find out when I meddle around with this. :)

Great job!

Can I change the thunder to load screen music, instead? That would be ideal.

Absolutely. For the most part the sounds are intuitively named. I think that one is something like questend.wav or endquest.wav, and it's in one of the first few .pfs files. Seems like most of the basic sounds are in the first few (according to #) .pfs files, then it gets into mob-specific sounds and so forth.

I even turned down the "open bag" sound which is something like itmclth.wav. Opening one bag isn't too loud but if you have a hotkey mapped to open all bags it gets very loud.

Wind tunnels you can just turn down your ambients and those stop, at least they did for me, this thunder thing is genius tho and will save me from going completely crazy!

Yeah the Lavastorm Nuclear Explosion needs to go away... or at least be toned down like 500%.

I don't know how many times I have been caught off guard by that sound but it's resulted in more than one spill.

not classic if you dont have obnoxiously loud sounds for random things in EQ. For instance when I loot my large sewing kits from my corpse I expect a ear bleeding loudness that only EQ classic could provide.

It's a false positive, go to http://www.viruschief.com/index.html or http://virusscan.jotti.org/en and see that only like 30% report a positive (the less accurate scanners). If it was a real virus most all would all be flagging it. Plus it's on SourceForge which is open source and considered one of the safer places to download from.

I may have to try this, I enjoy the sound effects but they do not respect the UI toggle all the time (I try to turn off Environment sounds yet they stay on).

I like to have Sounds turned up so I can hear spells / combat etc., but I do not like hearing the constant environment sounds when alt tabbed out of the game.

hmm, can't say this is a good thing. Hopefully the devs make it so you cannot disable atmospherics like they made it so you cannot disable hidehelm.

Thunderstorms are dangerous and drown out footsteps of mobs (or players on red..) aproaching behind you. You should be annoyed when a thunderstorm starts and disrupts your hearing and vision.

This also detracts from druid spells that effect weather, wake of karana.

Ok.. so now does anyone know where to find the sound files for the Hill Giants footsteps?? I'd like to amplify them enough to wake my neighbors.. or possibly change it to an air raid siren..

And then go camp ancient cyclops in South Ro - that'd be fun :)

My first time getting the AC on EQlive, I was actually listening with speaker volume turned up, as a "cheap necro's track" :D And it was what alarmed me to the spawn indeed. Did it ever since until they nerfed SRo/Oasis

Was anybody able to find out where the "coin loot" sound comes from? I'm talking about that "ching" sound, which appears everytime you loot a corpse with coin on it or when you pick up coin from your inventory. It's freakin loud on my system, need to remove or at least tune it down...

Any advice really appreciated!

I like the thunder sounds, it's just too frequent. There are no quiet rumbles it's always a large strike. It would be cool to update the sounds with better ambient loops. Maybe some birds in forests, owls at night, seagulls at ports etc.

Seagulls and Owls weren't invented until at least 2004, so nope.

I didn't see a Seagull in person until at least 2007, but there's still some IRL screenshots floating around the web from 2004-2005 so we know they were put in sometime around then.

Yeah, during the kunark era is was crazy. I think they did it on purpose to give druids something to do with their new weather control spell.

True story - I was shocked as hell when I was in TT and it stopped raining.

You know that point where the fog animation used to roll out and for an instant the draw distance was bugged and you could see forever? I distinctly remember my Voodoo 3 shitting itself so hard at the same instant I was experiencing TT on a nice day for the first time. It was like a double climax.
