View Full Version : Lag on 1 PC, and only in EQ, any ideas?

Not sure if anyone can help me or steer me in the right direction... Please forgive me in advance if I should not be posting this here- as I do not think it is EQ related, (hence the apologies) but since it is affecting eq, I figured why not give it a shot here; maybe someone knows what little mouse is eating my machine and taking away my escape from the real world.

One of my PCs is constantly lagging in game, (I am nonstop getting that warp message) in eq. I press spells, and my button stays depressed for however long it decides to at that moment. Tels can take a minute to go through. This is only on this laptop. My other other laptop and desktop, nothing, run perfectly fine.. no lag in game.

I've tried resetting my router (also changed the password); tried resetting my modem. I have ran malwarebytes, spybot, I've also run panda online scanning for viruses and such. I run AVG. I also tried restoring my windows to an earlier date.

One thing I did, was downloaded 3 programs to try and watch DVDs on my laptop (since win 8 does not have win media for movies). I am unsure if I got some crazy virus, but AVG and all my other scans aren't picking it up.

I have been loaded with work, so I haven't been on and was hoping the lag would be gone and maybe attribute it to being a fluke. I log in tonight, and same thing.

I'm not super computer savvy, but I have always been able to get viruses and such off (though I haven't had any in a few years) and figure out little computer problems.

Anyway, if anyone has any ideas, I thank you in advance!

I guess the first question is when did it start? Or has this particular PC always experienced this issue. Next question, specs of PC?

Heya Cyph,

PC has always ran flawless playing p99. Think I got this new laptop early summer. It started oh I would say around around when the emu patcher stopped working, maybe a bit before. So, about a week and a half?

Here are specs: (ASUS)
WIn 8 64 bit
Intel Core i7 3630 QM CPU: 2.40 ghz (8 CPUs)
Memory: 8192mb
Nvidia Geforce GTX 670MX

Edit - PS: I have comcast business class, highest running package- all other PCs run flawlessly, and fast.

That is strange. Sorry about asking for the PC specs, just wanted to rule out anything crazy.

I guess the next thing that comes to mind is how this PC connects to your modem compared to the others; wireless or wired? Perhaps a question for the other people here who are more techies, could this be related to the CPU being 8 core (in regards to the dual core fix)?

Ah no need to be sorry.. I am stuck so anything is great :)

Everything is wireless. From what I read (and of course I am no expert), I thought maybe it was the router... but from what I read, most likely it is not the router if it is just 1 PC. But, I changed my password and such anyway.

I'm thinking tomorrow for some extra troubleshooting will hook the laptop up to the modem directly and see if I get any lag. I really should have done that already, but I hate going down there, so been procrastinating.

It has been running without issue for months, up till just a little bit ago. So I am stumped.

I was going to say, try connecting the laptop up directly and see if it happens. Unless anyone else has any other suggestions?

First off I would uninstall those programs one by one and see if it fixes it. Also maybe try and mess with your frame rate in game. Have you tried running the game in windowed mode and fullscreen to see if this still happens? When you say lag do you mean latency issues or just choppy responses? If its latency, download a program that views your incoming/outgoing traffic and see if there is a program or something else that is hogging your bandwidth.

Id start by testing your download speed on the two laptops wired vs wireless on both. It could be a hardware issue with your wireless card. Also if you or a friend has a spare usb wireless adapter you can see if the game plays normally by disabling the wireless card built into your laptop.

I'm thinking its this...if P99 was compliant with the EQemu patcher we'd have an option to launch EQ with a single core. The fix is right there somehow.

Alas, the patcher has been disabled here :(

http://www.moestaverne.com - if you want to download the new patcher, launch with a single core and try a server that its compatible with...as a test :)

Honest: Got them all uninstalled. Tried safe mode few times, running panda scannerand a few more. Found an AVG uninstaller and was able to reinstall. Ran Malwarebytes. Few things found, and were removed etc. As soon as I got AVG running, things were fine for about a day, then boom, lag back and same as before.

Furniture:
Good PC: Download- 17.94 Mbps; Upload- 7.76 Mbps
Drive Me Batty PC: Download -17.61 Mbps; Upload -5.91 Mbps

Swish:
I will try that patcher. How do I launch with single core? I will try and figure that out :) Thank yas!

Whoops, missed this. I am not sure what the technical difference between lag and latency is, but it is very very similar to the ddos attacks we are having. So I am not sure what you would characterize that as. I will hit a spell, and the hotbar key will remain depressed. I will cast spells but they do not cast immediately. And when I hit F11, my number shows from 400ms - 1100ms and I go ld eventually or have to ctrl+alt+del out. My good pc shows about 61-68 ms consistently, and regardless of number of people in zone or what is going on those most I have ever seen it at was 71ms.

Thank you Derubael, hopefully get it all figured it out.

Does anyone think maybe that laptop is somehow compromised?

Can a laptop be attacked in some form?

All over my head now ><

I wonder if this is related to the Graphics Switching crap that companies are shipping with laptops nowadays. I've had this issue on a laptop before and it came down to weird video settings.

Maybe try forcing Single core usage, and perhaps forcing graphics switching off? And not just in power settings, I mean possibly bios or driver related.

Just a suggestion!

My experience with the hybrid video that run on some laptops is that EQ doesnt even trigger then swith to the better video card unless you set it too.(the cards switch normally with newer games)
