View Full Version : Did you play a female, but you are really a dude?

Wondering if any dudes here played a female char on live?

I had the awful mistake of making a Barb female War in live as my first char, then at level 40 had to retire her because of the constant men calling me "hun", "babe", "cutie" etc. But by that time I was too embarrassed to tell anyone I was a dude, so I was forced to remake.

My second char I made sure was a male and gave him a manly name.

I never did, but I had somebody in my guild who did. She/he actually got married in game, and the whole time the guy didn't know she wasn't really a girl. Later he found out. It was hilarious.

I ended up playing a lot of female characters in Anarchy Online, but it was more of a solo game so nobody cared. I figure if I have to look at a character model for hours and hours it may as well be a chick.

That is the main reason I made a female char in the first place. The barb women looked hot and the Barb men were all bare chested and in a skirt.

Hahahaha this is hilarious to me. When I started playing live in 1999 I convinced my bro to play. He didnt think he would like it so he created a Female barb shaman. When he logged in there were two level 50 barb warriors waiting for new players that were married in-game to choose a daughter! sure as shit they chose my brother and he fell in love with the game and ended up pretending he was a chick for like 2 years of his life. I laugh at him every time it gets brought up cause my bro has always been kind of a bad ass. Anyways the parents never found out so if your reading this and you played Genedana or Fulkson on Rodcet nife back in the day... Your daughter was a dude!!! hahahah

Fulkson and Genedana had an in-game divorce, fulkson remarried, My bro was getting gifts from his In-game step mother and genedana would get jealous so they just spoiled the shit out of him in some sick in-game family feud. and the whole time I knew he was still not sure if it was worth it. My main is female, but I generally go for male characters as alts to avoid certain kinds of people. That said, I did know a few male-played female chars back on Tholuxe Paells. I was, after all, a member of BladeQuest, the all-female char guild. Most did it for the free hand-outs.

Honestly I haven't come across anything weird on this server yet. No weird tells or special favors. Most people I play with already know who I am anyway regardless of which character I'm playing.

I for one never assume anything about a player based on their avatar one way or the other unless they specifically say something about them in RL. I'm pretty sure most people think this way nowadays (or at least they should).

Except for Ogres... I tend to believe they are actually retarded in real life. :p

I was a high-elf paladin when I started playing EverQuest, two weeks later I re-rolled, I decided on a male half-elf druid because I spent most of my time begging for SoW. My friends were in Freeport area, and I was only level 3. I died three times to gnolls in Highpass Hold. On my fourth run, I managed to get to the keep ramp, where this druid character Jezzebel was standing. Had a train behind me, she saved my ass. I asked if I could get a SoW from her, and an invis. It was night time, I didn't know about Kithicor... So she did one better, and ported me to West Commonlands. She gave me a Splitpaw Hide Tunic and I was ecstatic, felt like my best day on EQ so far. I asked her what it was like to play a high level druid and if she could provide me with any insider information. She explained to me that I made a wrong race choice on my druid, that I was just going to run out of mana constantly being naked (PVP server.) She said that if I rerolled either wood-elf of half-ling, she'd twink me and power level me some to catch up to my friends. So I did, I made a female wood-elf druid, just like her. Got a Foreman's Tunic, an Obsidian Scimitar, a Runed Mithril Bracer, and a Chipped Bone Bracelet out of it. Not much power leveling though, but that was okay. My friends were super jealous, one of them was a level 43 shaman and his gear wasn't even that good. I followed this Jezzebel druid around like a puppy for months, learned a bit more about her, met all of her EQ friends. Carried platinum for her in Rathe Mountains so if she got ganked, the players that ganked her would be out of range to me. I was an untouchable piggy bank. I even made my enchanter because of her, to do jewel-craft. Joined her all girl PK guild (The Bitter Roses), even designed a web page for the guild. She even netsexed people, and hit on them right there in group chat, so I thought it HAD to be a chick. She spoke of going dancing with guys, and how hot the guy she met there was, etc etc. Sometime after Luclin though, I find out from her actual brother, that Jezzebel, was never a her. Not gay either. Truly mind boggling.

Would he just be straight or double gay?

So maybe - you are double gay.

I was a female monk as my first character and since I am a real female character, I just automatically assumed that other female characters in-game were also real females.

I was very new to computer games.

There were three other female monks that were in my guild that i chatted to all the time. We'd have our own little all female monk group, we talked about everything about real life.. including (i was 20! was immature!) all feminine topics *ahem*

well, i quit the game about a year into it because i needed to focus on school/life.... but then, i still visited the guild forums....until one day, a real life picture thread was started and ALL three of those female monks were middle-aged men... ewwwwwww. They must have known that i was a real girl Or maybe thought that I was really really good at knowing a lot of women and was great at acting.

They were superb roleplayers apparently!

I don't often play female characters. The exception was on P99. I wanted to use the name Tiki and felt that it fit a female avatar better than a male. An Erudite named Tiki would make me look like a New York Giants fan and I couldn't have that. Plus, dat ass.

I played a female HE cleric on live for a while and had a couple of guildmates I played with regularly. One was a High Elf female wizard and the other a HE male enchanter. The wizard roleplayed a female, and always claimed to be a female (yes, actually claimed it). I didn't really think much of it, until the wizard actually came out with the truth that he was actually a gay male IRL. I was then told to NEVER tell the enchanter dude about it, because he was pretty much in love with the female he thought was playing the toon. I think people were generally concerned that this guy might kill himself if he found out his love interest was actually a dude IRL. it was pretty fucked up, and funny now that I look back at it.

My main toon on live, for god knows how many years, was female. And the namesake of my account name here.

There wasn't really any choice in the matter. When I started EQ and read the race and class descriptions I knew I wanted to be a gnome. HAVE YOU SEEN HOW UGLY MALE GNOMES ARE?! Yeah, no choice except female gnome.

My gender and sexuality were no secret to those who asked or if the topic came up in conversation. By default, though, I RPed the part. I played an MMORPG after all. I was in a mostly RP guild for quite some time and probably had more fun than I ever did leveling as quickly as feasible, joining a hardcore raiding guild.

I'm a male. I tried once or twice to play female over the years in the different mmorpgs i play, but I just can't do it. I feel like I'm being cheap. First of all, it feels fake to roleplay them. Second, it's easier to play as myself. Third, I don't want to ruin some pathetic young boys dream of meeting the elusive girl online.

Oh, and ya I liked to look at one of my female characters butt, but I couldn't stand playing so quit. And on that character I did claim to be a female in RL. It was just an experiment that failed.

Yes, too many bras and thongs in eq. I love to see females, but that was just stupid. I value immersion more than anything else, and a female with a lot of skin in everfrost makes no sense at all to me.

Same goes for the changes they made in VG. if I recall, they did some "adjustments" to armor by showing more skin. I thought that was just cliche and dumb. Same thing happened with the luclin models when they said they wanted them to be sexier. I know some gays like muscles, but the luclin male models all look like boxers and meat heads to me. It's a big turn off to play a meat head. I really hate the luclin models.

I don't want to make this post about luclin vs classic, but the classic males look more like males to me. The women in classic look like strippers, though. I wonder what kind of people are in management? *shivers*

The 2nd character I made in old EQ was a female wood elf druid. If the male model looks like a pansy, I didn't want to look at it on my screen all day. The more realistic female wood elf however, I was content with looking at. Not in a sick cartoon porn way mind you, but it looked more aesthetically appealing to me. Wood elf males.. no. They were too froofy for me back then (no offense!).

When I played my female, I did get hit on. I found a great and honest way to make them stop, without being rude.

"I'm happily married."

Nowadays, it's so common it's not even blinked at. Thanks to all the elves in WoW and guys playing them it's even accepted in most circles. I loved my DE Pk Wizard in old EQ.. yet I still rolled a female dark elf this time around. Times change...

Get over it. You should know better how stupid a young guy can be. Your fault for playing a female. It's like opening a case of beer and not expecting bad things to happen. Or going to the superbowl... No, I'm not legitimizing rape or incest or something wrongheaded like that. I just think you're expecting too much.

And, beyond that, I'm fine with guys playing females. They probably play in 3rd person most of the time. That's why they complain about looking at a guys butt. I prefer to play in first person. But even in 3rd person I like to see my guy because I like to see a well dressed guy wielding sharp things. It looks bad***.

I'd like to see more people roleplay families. Brothers/Sisters/Father/Mother. That would be fun. I actually remember being approached by someone asking me if i wanted to be their brother. I can't remember how I responded, but that was cool. You can change your last name to be the same too.

I also dont advertise that i'm a chick...

Also these games should have a lil *sticky at logon that says

On a more cereberal note, ive met plenty doods that can write an awesome chick... Robert Jordan I'm lookin at your grave... he wrote a ton of cool chicks in his stories...

I developed a system for this. I just assume that everybody playing is a dude until i'm corrected. lol.. So i call everybody bro or dude or man.

Seems to work thus far!

More than you, I think LOL I'm a girl who plays a girl and I get "thx bro" and "sup dude" quite often. :p

How was this even an issue after roger wilco and later vent came out?

Granted i assume everyone on line is a middle aged male pedophile until I get to know them.

Started as a joke to see if people really did give more freebies and help to cute female toons - and they do.

I have heard this time and again. People like to give stuff to female characters more than male (but not the Troll and Ogre ones for some reason.. yarg!). I know a few people who had experienced this on live. I don't think I could get used to being called sweetie and hun from the male characters though so I've only played male characters.

My main has always been male, normally my chief alt too. Lesser alts and trade bots or time wasting toons have been female here and there.

I remember the first female toon. It was in EQ Live, sometime in 1999. My wife created a female barb shaman on my account to try the game. She got hooked and her own account. I was farting around in a newbie zone on the female toon left on my account.

Some male gnome mage of a mid 40s level was killing guards. He was smitten with me and gave me plat and items. It creeped me out on a very core level. I still took the goodies as I could use them, but from then on I made sure folks knew I was crossdressing if I played a female toon.

Heh. One of my longest online friends from EQ 1999 forward... crossdressed and I didn't know it for years. When I found out I just felt like it made sense. They never attempted to hide their true gender. I and many more just assumed. I remember thinking from time to time, "man she's a lot like a guy, must be a tomboy". Hehe! It made perfect sense when it dawned on me. I felt a little silly, but not as silly as the fools that try pickups in an MMO!

Recall a buddy played a female wood elf called Sweetcheeks or wth it was, begging from lvl30+ people in Rivervale. Got a ton of stuff, chilled in EC selling and buying and had yaks and crap in classic in no time. Future used car salesman.

You are playing a MMORPG......

Many Men Online Role Play as Girls....?

...Someone once said to me when it comes to online RPGs, usually GIRL = Guy In Real Life

Never heard of those. Hilarious. Brilliant.

I never look at gaming (or working out at the gym) as pairing opportunities. So, in gaming, it doesn't matter what gender they really are. Although I do think it is a bit weird for a guy to play female characters; I know that tons of guys do, lol.

/edit removed the 'gay' comment after further consideration.

Also, yes I have drooled over wood elf females as much as the next guy. :P

I find it quite funny it's considered more gay to look at a female ass than a male ass (assuming you play 3rd person of :p)

well I don't know about EQ but if you play a game like TERA you're pretty much obligated to roll a female character.

I didn't on live, but I do on here.

I find male enchanters to seem very date-rapey, and felt uncomfortable playing a male enchanter.

I have this debate in my head sometimes, but EQ's models are bad... then worse... and while the originals are sexist and the females look like highly pixelated adult models... ide rather that then Mr. Nobut and Snake Pliskin 00013445 or Gnome BABBY

When it comes to ogres and trolls... the males are sexier by a hairs width... thats about it =P and thats not sayin much, just that the females for those are so ugly as to turn a straight guy into an ogre man lover.

Tera babes on the media page were hawt =P

I guess I'm cursed cause I grew up in the low bitrate era =P so pixelation of my babes is no big drawback lol.

Funny ass thread.

I think a lot of guys created female characters back in the day, completely unwitting of the response it would receive from other dudes. I know I created a cute little gnome from the beginning of EQ that I thought was so cute as a kid. Then all of a sudden everyone was all RP flirting hard on my gnome, and I was like wtf.

Was a totally different time. Even on non-rp servers, everyone sort of roleplayed to some degree. Except for the horny naive young guys hitting on your female toons, it made for a more interesting experience.

Then you can't live without them after awhile! You feel like people are being rude otherwise!...

j/k j/k I kid I kid!

But I've been called "hun" on one of my ancient and retired male toons from live back in 2006. I played with a good number of girls (verified in vent) who called me hun, dear, and sweetie in chat all the time.... I have gotten the same thing at work, just intimate friendly terms for people you share personal stories with.

On live, I was playing a female HIE paladin in Crushbone, and this male human paladin I was grouped with commented that they could tell that I wasn't a chick. Turns out that the paladin was a chick playing a dude character. They said they didn't want to deal with being hit on and wanted to role play a valiant knight or something.

Works both ways I suppose...

Just as its been stated before I just assume everyone is a guy until its proven otherwise.
I have had female characters call me (a guy in RL and a guy in EQ) hon, or sweetie, or babe or whatever. I just take that (hopefully) it means they're a female in real life and roll with it. I don't make an issue or say anything.

I've always wondered if there was a subconscious human instinct to recreate a roughly 50:50 sex ratio, even in virtual worlds. The extremely high numbers of males in the player base would lead to a large number of men playing females to balance the population out. It's pretty safe to say this happens for some reason or another.

Just think of how game worlds would look if everyone played their own sex. Kinda weird I'd imagine.

I uploaded a dark elf female as my forum avatar because she resembles my wife. Skinny asians FTW.

I've been playing female characters since MUDs. At first it was for free stuff, and now it's because most male models are bowlegged palefaced nerds who too closely resemble some of the people who may play the same game as me.
