View Full Version : Want to get started on Red

So a year ago I was hanging around on blue, but really wanted to get going here on red. Blue didn't satisfy the need, so I took a hiatus. But the EQ PvP itch never did, so it's finally brought me back. I know there were some issues a year ago (and some probably now) but what the hell...the population looks a little better, seems more stable, and I'll just deal like you guys have and come enjoy it.
So since I feel like a challenge, I'm going to startup on the box with a Ranger as the first toon (glutton for punishment, I know). I've never done a Ranger seriously, and especially never on a PvP server, so I'm looking for a little help.
So if you guys have any advice on the best way to go about a Red-style Ranger, or even just some extra ranger gear laying about that you don't know what to do with, let me know. I'll see you all online!

honestly no reason to roll a ranger with the current state of archery

Learn to use pumice, stack buffs, joust, make friends, do fletching. Contribute to a healthy competitive, fun environment. GL :)
Alright, some of that stuff I'd never really done in the past (always played casters on Rallos, never had to deal with jousting). As far as contributing, that I can do =)

Well I did sign up for a challenge then! What's up with archery though?

archery misses most of the time and hardly does any damage at all

Play a mage and use fire bolt as arrow. Will be better.

Ah that's a bummer. Still doesn't deter me though, it'll just be one less tool to utilize!

Will do, and that'd be very appreciated. I know the 'right way' to play is to pick a strong solo farming class (mage, necro, enchanter), level up and farm gear, then twink out the melee. And I know that suggestions about playing a caster would make PvP a lot easier. But I really want to give 100% at what's generally considered a weak pick, and see if I can't really surprise some people (myself included) with what comes from it.
If nothing else I'll be looking for some friends to do some team-up action. I'll track 'em down, you guys kill 'em dead =)
Oh and what's the guild situation like at the moment? Is there any place for a high-level tracker at the end-game?

Advice for any new player: make friends and don't let the solo grind get to you. Talk to ppl in your zone (or they will kill you without a word spoken). Beg/buy a decent weapon, ranger-only weapons should be dirt cheap, or free, because no one plays rangers really.

Think most people covered majority of the issues and things in above posts, The downsides of archery, Benefits of track, Being a hybrid exp(not really that bad with exp bonus tbh). Starting fresh with no uber twink gear like a fungi will hurt, but all the more to raise bind wound. Once you start getting spells/buff spells it gets better. Treat your bow like autoaim to your target in pvp if you can't see which way he went, level up in south karana and track down that quillmane bitch get a cloak(even provide selling cloak service once lvl 30-40 use plat to buy better gear).
Like Pudge said, most ranger gear is dirt cheap if not free due to lack of them. Personally I wish there were some more rangers on the server, I have only ever played with Brainz really and hes pretty decked out so his dps and utility in pvp is amazing. But I know Exed's ranger was pretty badass too. Sektor had one too named Forward though I think its now stripped. If archery were up to par, These rooting/snaring/nuking/healing tracking hybrids would be a even more of a force to reckon with in pvp if played right.

Rangers pretty good. A little behind the other pure melee/hybrids, but still solid if you can stick with it )
I got short sword of Mornin quest done by 35 solo on my ranger here. I just didn't stick with it.
