NPCs casting spells that they shouldn't until a certain era

Tonight, while farming a lizard crusader in CT for my SK's quest armor drops, I caught a few spawns and watched them buff themselves. Multiple times I saw them cast Grim Aura - shadowknights do not get this spell until Velious. I assume its on all NPC shadowknight spell tables.

This is actually an unfinished that project I would like completed prior to opening a new server.

We now have the ability to era rule npc spell entries, so spells can have a rule attached per expansion, or month etc.

The following is a list of npc spells and their IDs. If anyone wants to help label which spells occur in which era, I can fix them with simple queries.

For example:

Any spells not needing changed (prekunark) do not need labels. If there is a nonclassic spell listed, it can be labled as i.e. (Never, or NotClassic), and it will be removed.

Hey Nilberg, this is tangentially related at best, but was NPCs having a level-appropriate spellbook something that just came with the stock client or was that intended by the original p1999 developers?

On live, generic high-level NPCs seemed to cap out at 29-34 spells with a few exceptions. Clerics would wrath you, wizards thunder strike, necros venom of the snake, etc. Even a lot of the notable NPCs like Vox would spam wrath. The first time I remember a generic NPC-caster casting a high-level spell was the ST-revamp where the gargs were casting GSS and everyone joked that they had Emp on farm.


FWIW, I like the change and it hasn't been an issue since you guys limited NPC mana pools years ago. After vanilla, casters on live were pathetic.

Nilbog, I started compiling a list but wonder how to flag the original example (i.e. Grim Aura). For instance, Grim Aura is a 'Classic' spell for a Necromancer, but a Shadowknight only gets that spell in 'Velious'.

So how should that spell be categorized, do you need to add classes to the era tag? Such as:

346 Grim Aura Velious(Shadow Knight)
or
346 Grim Aura Classic(Necromancer) Velious(Shadow Knight)
or
?

I'm not sure how many other cases of this there are, but that one just jumped out at me.

p99 started with each npc class having essentially every spell, which we've limited over the years. It's not a client thing, just a db table.

Nilbog, I started compiling a list but wonder how to flag the original example (i.e. Grim Aura). For instance, Grim Aura is a 'Classic' spell for a Necromancer, but a Shadowknight only gets that spell in 'Velious'.

So how should that spell be categorized, do you need to add classes to the era tag? Such as:

346 Grim Aura Velious(Shadow Knight)
or
346 Grim Aura Classic(Necromancer) Velious(Shadow Knight)
or
?I'm not sure how many other cases of this there are, but that one just jumped out at me.

Any spells that should be limited per class per era, either notation from above will work. There shouldn't be that many overlapping ones, and they will be treated as one-offs for query updates.

Nilbog, here is what I have so far, if this is too messy let me know if you want a different format (copied from tab delimited file). There were a lot more overlapping spells than I thought. Note that some of the formatting came in bad (such as Chloroplast using quotes "Classic (Druid, Shaman)"). Not sure how you wanted to handle exceptions like these where multiple classes are for a certain era? Can reformat to how you like.

Also, if a spell was 'Classic' with no exceptions I created a 'Classic' field. I can remove that if you don't like it:

It wasn't an issue with formatting, after sorting out kunark, velious, and the one-offs, a quick [^\d\r\n] took care of everything else.

Pending update:
-NPCs will no longer cast spells inappropriate for the era.

This has no effect at the moment as we are in the last era of timeline, but for a new server will be great. Your second code block there mostly includes npc specific procs (i.e. DrakeBreath) and will not need additional rules set. Any of the remaining spells needing rules, let me know and I will modify.

Here are the last outstanding ones, I suspect they are classic, but I couldn't find specific mob information. The Maestro Lifetap seemed obvious, but the ID made me think it was an upgraded version in the client. I dunno, here are the ones I'm too lazy to get sure on and am giving up on:

Notes on findings from the first list:

Blast of Cold:
I can't pin point it, but I believe with high certainty this is an out of era lower level wizard spell which replaced Shock of Frost, I can find no mention of it in era. P99 currently has an item (Ice Crystal Staff) that procs this and it is incorrect. Confirmation from my log below:

Kind of odd how the ID of '372 Blast of Cold' on the spell appears classic when you compare to the other IDs, but '8447 Shock of Frost' appears to be sequenced much later.

Gangrenous Touch of Zum`uul:
This appears to be a Level 60 Necro spell that would be in the scope of the server (assuming you are going to revamp Chardok):

This post seems to indicate this spell should drop off a rare mob after the Chardok Revamp (Grand Advisor Zum`uul). Text from comments:

Me and my guild camp royalty for few hours other day killed king 5 times and queen 4 times but in that time a rare spawn called grand advisor zum'uul spawned and dropped a lvl 60 necro spell called ganrenous touch of zum'uul and i was lucky enough to win roll asked many high lvl necro's if they had and many had said no so wondered if any others have seen this mob..

Granted that comment is from 12/14/2001, it is very close to era. I don't see any patch notes since chardok revamp and this date that indicate any Necromancer spells were added. Only thing that comes close is:
- Removed some bad NPCs in Chardok. (12/12/2001 patch)

I don't see how that would relate to that spell. Not sure if other NPCs at this time (level 60 necro NPCs) could cast this? Maybe this spell is on your radar for the Chardok revamp, but maybe it slipped through the cracks. Either way, I bet some necro's wouldn't mind a Disease Based Lifetap (assuming on PvP server it would be great?)

Not sure if this helps since I'm not sure what era he's actually supposed to get it, but "Mana Drain" is the spell Quag Maelstrom (named Seafury) "casts" even though it's like an instant-cast.

For instance, I don't know if Fear2 has a -MR check that makes it harder to resist than the player cast Fear spell, and in which era the mob gained those abilities. Devs maybe have that info already, or maybe they don't, I just couldn't definitively locate those myself.

Knowing which mobs cast on p99 will make it easier to research though, so thanks for that!

Yeah I wasn't sure if any of it would actually be useful or not, I misunderstood your other post I thought you couldn't figure out which mobs were casting them to see if they should be casting them or not.

I tried to look up what those mobs should be casting in this era but my EQ research skills are subpar at best I didn't get very far so figured I would post what mobs I've seen cast them and hope that helps someone figure out if they should be casting it or not in the era.

And yeah, all the logs are from p99 over the last few months.

Thanks for updating! In regards to Avatar of Abhorrence and Muscle Spasm, could not find any evidence aside from people saying he casted / proc'd (phrased like that) a snare/dot.

I'm thinking he is a Rogue class and a bad ass, maybe his claws are coated in a poison that procs? It looks like later on he was added with a drop that was for some poison making quest, so maybe the lore angle works that it procs like a poison?

I think it is a nilbog call on that one, have had a hard time locating in era posts that have anything definitive.

** NPC Spell Caster Changes **

- NPCs are now bound by spell casting distance rules, meaning that an
NPCís spell will no longer connect from halfway across the zone
- NPCs now have a chance to be interrupted by normal combat when

Yes, they were. But even when it’s been raised a dozen times Nilbog doesn’t act on it.

We all know back in velious and prior a wizard mob would force strike and various other pretty poor 35ish spells.

As a rogue on live you would actively hunt shaman NPC’s as they were a free kill casting useless crap on you while you backstabbed them.

Maybe someone could look for anecdotes like that?

I have spent my last 3 lvls and 2 aa there and they very very rarely cast IB. I never saw then cast tash ever. It was basically like this

Necro - Screaming Terror, Infectoius cloud and once in a blue moon dooming darkness and scourge
Enchanter - slow, charm
Wiz - gravity flux and a lighting strike

Now (most have Diamond Skin & Arch Shielding up):

Necro - IB, Ignite bones,
Enchanter - Tashania, Discordant Mind, Shiftless Deeds
Wiz - BoF, AoE-Force Spiral of Al'Kabor, Conflaguration, Force Strike

Needless to say I stop going there this weekend after scrapping my corpse off the wall twice from the wizzie mobs....

Dungeons like Dalnir, which are caster-heavy, were balanced around NPC casters with shitty spellbooks. So these dungeons are super hard now compared to how it was in classic.
