View Full Version : How to PBAOE 200+ mobs at once with no risk

Description: Essentially, the low hp aggro mechanics on the server allow you to lock mob aggro onto a player character.

While aggro is locked, a second character can kill the train of 200+ mobs via pbaoes (bard/wizard/etc).

The low hitpoint kiter can be on the other side of the zone during this process. Therefore, there is no risk of death similar to traditional bard pbaoe kiting. Two character can kill a train of 200 mobs doing 100,000 damage per aoe cast. Used in Skyfire at level 60, one can get 20% of a level per pull.

Note that on live even traditional bard pbaoe kiting (non-low hp) was not used significantly until planes of power by Worry from Sullon Zek. Until that point in time bards were still using charm burning or swarm kiting (charm mob and send into a pack of enemy mobs) for leveling.

The reason that I am posting this here is that I do not want to lvl 50's on the first day of the new sz99 server.

Ah, my time to shine. I have solo kited and low HP kited from lvl 20-54 on my bard. Heres the deal. With solo kiting, you die a lot. But the dying is worth it usually because you gain more XP overall than you would lose from a death. In Low HP kiting (at high levels, 48+), you lose as much XP from a death as you would gain on a kite. Low HP kiting, while it poses less risk overall, requires a few things that solo kiting does not.

First, and most simply, low HP kiting requires a partner. Sometimes partners are hard to find. The person deemed to be the "bait" must have SoW, Jboots, or selos. In addition, they need to not be an idiot. A dumb "bait" will get you killed. They need to constantly be damaging themselves throughout the pull, and if they stop for a second too long, boom, they're dead, and all the aggro goes on you, the person doing the damage. Usually results in both players dying. If their health goes over 20%, even for a second, aggro transfers. Boom, you're dead. Bait gets an add and gets casted on or stunned. Boom, you're dead. Low hp kiting may be less risky when compared to solo kiting, but you still die. A lot.

Second, in low HP kiting mobs of a high level (40+, e.g. stuff in BW), aggro will transfer from the bait to the person doing damage after a certain amount of damage is done. Usually, every 30% of damage you do to the mobs results in aggro transferring from the bait, to you. If you arent paying close attention and zoning periodically, you can get killed very easily. Again, saying that there is "no risk" is completely wrong. I have died to this many a time, as it is hard to judge when you've done that amount of damage.

Third, there are only a few zones in the game with enough mobs and an appropriate area that can support this type of kiting. DL, BW, OT seem to be the big three. These zones get crowded very, very quickly. In BW, usually one duo pulls the entire zone. In OT, you usually have a few groups, but mobs get scarce quickly. Basically, there is a limit on how many people can be low hp kiting in a level range at a given time, due to the fact that there arent very many zones where this can be done.

TL;DR low hp kiting is LESS risk, not NO risk.

That bug thread states that below 20%, the mobs continue to aggro regardless of any other threats added. This is demonstrably not true. After a certain percentage of damage is done to the monsters, they turn away from the low hp person and on to the person doing the damage. You can avoid this by zoning periodically, but it still happens.

All of these kids that are crying about how bard kiting will ruin the release of the new box don't seem to understand how severely limited this sort of kiting is in classic zones. Gorge hounds / spiders in EK and cents / gnolls / aviaks in SK are about the extent to AE kiting. There are far less npc nodes to pull in these zones compared to OT and DL and obviously is only good til about level 35ish on a level 50 capped server.

These tactics were nerfed.... in Luclin. Also in agreement with you... there is risk as a certain point the bard WILL get aggro on the train. This can be managed but it requires significant planning.

Also, 1 yellow of 60 in an AE pull doesn't seem terribly impressive, especially split between only two people. It's not like xp is slow in 60.

Doing skyfire is certainly a pain. I did it once with another bard and a wizard. Exp was not that great for how long it took with the 3 of us. It is doable though; I'm sure we weren't super efficient.

Did any of you people play pre-Luclin EQ? If anybody had managed to do what the OP documents back in the day, McQuaid and company would've gone into total panic mode. The "tactic" would've been declared an exploit with bans for anybody repeating it. The players doing it would've been very lucky not to be temp banned with XP and loot removed from their characters prior to reinstatement. The game would've been patched ASAP to make it impossible to repeat.

This isn't classic EQ, it's retarded bullshit.

It's also classic (though no-one in classic times could take advantage of it as we can now with broadband connections and exponentially faster computers), but just because we can doesn't mean we should.

Even so, I doubt there would be many people complaining about this if Bards only used it to level themselves. The mess created by constantly powerleveling other players and thereby inconveniencing the rest of the player base through zone domination/death aggro etc. is the problem.

TL;DR defending low HP kiting is silly.

There is 0 skill and only 30 min worth of effort involved in gathering a low hp kite. Finding a wizard who wants to jackoff for an hour and cast their PBAE and mana spell for 20 min of the hour is easy, wizards love exp. I lvled around two dozen+ people on red server with BW and SF kites. I got one cleric 40-46 in one pull, was funny shit.

PS - SF used to be super cake to gather, just be lvl 51 and track. If you can't figure that out you dumb. I lvl a Wiz 59-60 in 7 hours I think with SF kites. That being said, now that track is vlassic, SF kites suck compared to BW. BW is the most brainless easy shit ever. pull entire zone, PBAE down, win.

They reduced how much aggro/hate low health would give far after Velious (so it probably wouldn't be changed here). I remember people abusing it a lot in PoFire.

Although even after the nerfs on live, it's not rare to see my monk get low health aggro when pulling something else, and the level 100 creature my group was fighting would still start to come for me. I don't know about you, but whatever they set the aggro amount to be, it's still pretty darn high.

I had the same opinion about invis pulling. I don't care if it's classic; I care that it utterly trivializes the game. In fact I'm pretty sure that our current implementation is NOT classic, but so what.

Also the amount of 'work/tactics involved in setting up a low hp kite' is approximately zero. I know because I did this in OT once on my bard: go tag a bunch of mobs while zooming around at light speed; have a friend cast some sort of beneficial spell on you and run around with low hp. The risk of dying was 0.0. Now I suppose in DL/BW with casters it might be about 0.1% harder to circle them up and/or deal with sowed mobs, but on the whole the risk/reward ratio is silly compared to 'normal' EQ. I really don't see how anyone can possibly defend low HP kiting as good for the server.

EQ is about beating pve content using any tools at your disposal. There is nothing more fundamentally wrong with low-hp kiting than with rooting a pack of mobs and charming one at a time, using an invis clicky to farm insane xp.

Creative use of game mechanics IS EverQuest. That's the game. Bitching about someone being too good at it is crazy.

I remember low health being a problem to the extent that if someone dropped low health while grouped the mob was going to V-line straight to them. No amount of taunting or hate increase would pull the mob off until the low health person was healed or killed. Time frame on when it was like this, I'm not so sure, 2000-2005?

When the huge amount of threat that low hp causes was changed down the road, it was only changed to make things "easier" for other content ie who cares if so and so has shitty resists and gets low health, they won't get aggro and bad play is excused.

Low hp agro has been in EQ since the dawn of time, people just have the resources (tech) and the smarts to accomplish more now than they did in 1999. Another reason low hp aggro is important is in a res situation on a raid.

Mobs that hadn't had enough damage done to them (let's just say, freshly pulled) would go smack and usually instagib a person that was rezzed.

You think that low hp threat was permanent eh? Or enough threat to consitute doing 90% of a mob's hp without changing targets?

That's an exaggeration. Low-HP is a modifier flag, like sitting, its not permanent and as soon as you go above the threshold, mobs will turn on whomever now has the most aggro. Also, even in BW kites I always had to zone or camp out at intervals to clear my built-up aggro as my DPS caught up and surpassed the modified threat from Low-HP.

Another reason low hp aggro is important is in a res situation on a raid.

Mobs that hadn't had enough damage done to them (let's just say, freshly pulled) would go smack and usually instagib a person that was rezzed.

More than 4 mobs would aggro on you, but any mobs above 4 behaved oddly once they got into melee range. AE groups wouldn't have been possible otherwise.

That makes no sense sorry. Amazing that I don't remember NPCs constantly switching targets on raids because there was someone with low HP around. I DO remember them switching targets when someone would get too much aggro. I do not ever remember a single mob launching an AOE and all of the sudden going ape shit on every person in the raid, other than the tank, because they've got "low hp aggro". That is, unless the tank died!

This is also true. Why do you think there weren't AOE groups going on like there are here on live? Because people didn't know how to do it? No, because it didn't work like it does here..

The strategy of "everyone under the dragon" is precisely to combat low HP aggro ping-pong. If the dragon is going to be ping-ponging around chasing low HP casters at max-cast range, you aren't going to kill the dragon as a melee chasing the dragon's ass around the raid. Its better to keep the melee DPS stationary and have the casters blow their wad, eat a round of combat and die and let the melees keep on DPSing. That's Classic.

I remember low-hp insta gibs during raids.

I remember it being very difficult, but you could eventually peel from low hp, assuming the person lived long enough.

@Billy: if the person was low HP before the tank or others on the hate list had enough threat, it would happen.

I spoke with someone the other day about low level aggro working like this as well. Very similar to low HP or sitting aggro.

Peep out some of that /sit logic for threat and see if it can be applied to low HP stuff. Kanras is our man, if he can't do it; Nilbog can.

Unfortunately the donate button has no bloomin onion option but I would gladly order one for the victorious dev.

its Easy to do this pre kunark too. Dont need OT, and shit. PRe kunark you can do BB guards, Freeport guards. ogre guards. Its all about killing guards 33+.

The guards, and particularly those who were in town, had very high resists compared to other NPCs.

Guard Reskin/Tolus in EC weren't too bad, but..

Sergeant Slate and every other guard that conned blue in East Freeport/Kelethin/Halas/Grobb (you name it) were an absolute bitch to keep rooted or damage with spells... many if they conned green too. They also had a rather enormous assist radius.

I really need to follow through on posting the parses of killing a few. Fail @ me.

This mechanic could complicate pulling the hunter/forager cycle in TT when they spawned a long ways from your camp.

Keeping them close would definitely help, but it seemed like time was a factor as well. A mob that gave up pursuit also seemed to not just stop chasing, but warp back to a [random?] point on their patrol path.

My "time factor" impression may have arisen from classic-era packetloss and latency. Even when I thought I was doing a good job teasing the frog back to camp, the server and my client did not really agree where we were in the world. Once re-sync'ed, the frog seemed to "warp" back to his patrol path.
