I am considering starting a toon to recapture that original EQ feeling. I have a question about the spellbook that I could not find diggin through the forums (for 2 days). Do casters have to stare at the spellbook like back in the day? I think it was in velious when that no longer became the case (at certain level, 35 perhaps... been so long ago, and I was super stoked when that happened). This may very well impact my decision about playing anew.
Thanks for reading,

You won't have to look at the spellbook.
I am also pretty sure it was removed during classic.

Thanks Obrae for responding quickly. You have sealed my decision to play :) Staring at spell book sucked lol
Spellbook meditation was removed post-Luclin.

Spell casters no longer need to see their spell book when meditating. Once a character has the meditation skill, it will function when the character is sitting down.
This is a limitation of the Titanium UI.
If it is possible, we need to implement it!
We should also incorporate /meditate or pressing that big "Meditate" button in the spell book! http://www.tski.co.jp/baldio/patch/20000830.html
With the requirement to /sit before /meditate!! http://www.tski.co.jp/baldio/patch/20000823.html
Oh baby!

yeah, its a classic feature...most of us just don't remember having to do it because we out lvl'd the requirement long before it was removed from the game.
Nilbog has said that it is something he is not able to implement on p99.

*Edit: Nvm I thought that was a link to a working patch for EMU code. This is one thing I support. I hate a lot of shit that gets changed here. But this is one legit one.

wasn't there also no spell book after lev 35 in classic/kunark era, way before it was removed completely?

Can't wait until they figure out a way to thwart the Titanium UI and force full-screen spellbook meditation.

So if you had to look at the spell book, what happened in the velious UI?

yes, this is what i was trying to get at when said that most of us don't remember having to stare at the spell book during velious. it was still required in the game, but many of us had out lvl'd the need to do it by velious.

Damn so late ?, i didn't remember that.
Well i had great time leveling cleric with that book in my face. I remember trying to judge the number of frogs pulled by the sound of them haha.

If you neckbeards want to stare at your spellbooks while medding, just do it, and leave the rest of us out of it =P

Has nothing to do with personal taste...if Nilbog could figure out a way to make us do it then I think we would have it on here.

The spellbook didn't totally cover the screen, depending on your resolution.

Might be possible to do something like.. if spellbook open, and player < 35, make the screen have blind effects (black), with the spellbook on top of it. Rogean had mentioned it might be possible. I do not think it will be possible to replicate the 'Meditate' button as it once was.
In August 2000, they removed the necessity of clicking the 'meditate' button while spellbook was open, and also removed the /meditate command. Meditating still required the spellbook to be open, prior to level 35.
AUGUST 30, 2000
Opening your spellbook will automatically cause you to begin meditating providing that you have the skill.
Removed the /meditate command since it is no longer necessary. Pre-35 spellbook meditating was removed altogether in 2002.
MARCH 19, 2002
Spell casters no longer need to see their spell book when meditating. Once a character has the meditation skill, it will function when the character is sitting down.
That being said.. the ability to use a Velious or earlier UI would natively resolve the issue.
