One classic aspect p99 launched without was disabling Paineel until the appropriate point in the timeline.

Traditionally, it was released in February 2000.

***Announcements***
The City of Paineel, home to the infamous Heretics of Erudin, is now
available via the Optional Patch. In addition, Erudites may now also be
Shadowknights in addition to the other classes available to them. All
Erudite Necromancers, Shadowknights, and Clerics who worship the God of
Fear, Cazic-Thule, now start in the City of Paineel. As such, if you
wish to create a character of this type from this point forward, you
*must* download the Paineel zone-files via the Optional Patch.
Please note that if you downloaded the Paineel zone files recently, you
must run the Optional Patch again to insure you have the correct
version of the files.
Part of my ongoing recreation of p99 is content being accurate even if it has passed on our current timeline. If/when specifics are available, the content is fixed for later. In the event we open another server from the beginning, it behooves us to create on/off switches for those times.

So I have some questions about original Tox:

Until that patch in February 2000, evil Erudite necromancers spawned in Tox at the heretics hut.. noted by #6 on the map below (thanks steveprutz):

http://www.steveprutz.com/eq/images/toxxulia_maps.jpg

How long after that patch did the Heretic GMs remain in the hut?

Where were the evil cleric GMs?

According to the oldest modern research (eqmac), the hut is abandoned and ran by abandoned heretic pets.

Referencing the old showeq logs, the following npcs were present at the time the logs were captured:
Marzus Demsion
Norliss Nancer
Ubarsti Respelti
Yinxia Noderlus
Pluxia Vaktus
Gorjhin Sorqez
Illstara Frillep
Plestil Vroce
Wrebbin Brist
Talrigar Eklorin

Maybe more than that, but the above is a list of necromancer gms and shopkeepers around their area.

Should these npcs still exist in Kunark? Were they removed in February of 2000? I have no personal recollection of these guys as I didn't explore that area.. ever.

If the npcs should still exist at this point, I will add them and their quests. For example, Marzus Demsion has a quest for killing the now derelict Rungupp.
http://web.archive.org/web/20001005225841/http://gameznet.com/eq/quest/rungupp.html

heretic prophets - missing npcs which should still exist in the zone. I am going to add them, but have no information regarding their appearance. Brief discussion on allakhazam (in 2002) speaks of them being triggered from killing the abandoned heretic pets. This was not the case on eqmac, or I couldn't make it work.
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/npc.html?id=4994

If anyone has information regarding the above, or about classic Tox in general, your input is requested.

Thanks.

Classic (real classic) definitely had a "Necromancer Hut" out there in Toxx that I recall using before the hole. I don't have too many specifics because I only made 1 Erudite Necro ever during that timeline. It had the guild masters and spell vendors.

Where was the erudite necro starting location at that time? Good question, I do not remember.

Were the evil clerics in there too? No idea, only remember robed NPCs.

Research on pre-Paineel Odus is scant. It's like Splitpaw 1.0... probably lost in the ether.

WERE there evil erudite clerics/SKs before the Paineel patch?

WERE there evil erudite clerics/SKs before the Paineel patch?

Erudite necro's spawned in tox near the Erudin entry. There were huts in tox that had some guild masters and spells. Most evil erudites ended up in Qeynos evil guilds.

By default, necros WERE NOT KOS to Erudin guards. Dubious, one faction hit away from threatening.

Erudite shadow knights and evil clerics were not introduced until Paineel.

Now that you mention it yes, I do remember the Erudite SK addition. Ah... takes me back.

Make sure this is an optional patch so its classic? JK lol.

I distinctly remember Erudite SKs being added with Paineel, but not Erudite clerics... interesting.

I think it's very likely they (evil ones) were also added with Paineel, along with the ability of them to worship CT. If that's not the case then they probably just were not KoS to their guildmasters.

Relatively certain there were no heretic cleric GMs.

IIRC it was clerics and shadowknights w/ Paineel.

The only evil option an Erudite could be at launch was Necro.

Way to necro the thread =P

Small tangent now that this question shakes my memory, and I am not sure if this is listed anywhere inP99 patch history, but one reason erudite SKs were interesting is the high starting INT.

Once upon a time, before Velious, hybrid classes only had HALF the mana of full casters, and also had to wait their full weapons delay after a spell completed to swing the weapon, rather than the weapon delay continuing to "tick" while a spell was being cast.

Anyone know if P99 had these effects earlier in Blue timeline? Because currently, hybrids are using the post-patch formula where their mana matches that of full casters, and their spells use the same mana cost as full casters, and their swings complete while spells are being cast (resulting in a swing going off just as a spell does).

The above are not how the game was at launch.

Dunno about Green/P99, but there's definitely patch evidence for that:

Rangers, Paladins, and SKs now have mana equivalent to that of a pure caster with the same stats. This will give those hybrids a good deal more mana, regardless of their stats.

Due to the above memory shake, I made a new bug post (https://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2966497#post2966497) regarding hybrid mana pools, inflated spell mana cost, and hybrid weapon swing timers.

Have a look.

Narrows down which hut and talks about which 2 npcs give quests in the hut:

http://www.thecomputershow.com/computershow/hints/everquests.htm

This quest takes place in the Tox Forest. Talk to the female guildmaster (forget her name) in the necro hut. She wants you to kill Darla Starfire, a level 5ish npc who is supplying the hated Kerrans. Your reward for turning in her head is a torch. Another lucrative quest. For Erudites (clerics, paladins, and those who follow prexus or quellious) :
The peacekeeper staff is a staff useable only by erudite clerics and paladins. The staff does 5 damage and has a delay of 28. The only real advantage of this staff is that it grants +10 charisma when held. This quest begins at the clerics guild in erudin. If you accept the quest you will be sent to the Tox Forest to search for an NPC. The NPC is in the first hut to the right after you leave the city gates. He will give you a staff and directions on how to continue the quest. Basically you will be required to kill a treant and bring back the treant shards to the NPC. When you do so he will grind them into treant resin and hand them back to you. You know must get the other required item to combine in with the treant resin to create the staff. Go to the vault in erudin(the bank) and talk to the banker on the far left. Tell him you are in need of some vasty deep water. He will tell you that you need a guild coin in order for him to give it to you. Now return to the clerics guild and tell them that this NPC sent you to get a guild coin. You will be given the coin. When you give it to the banker you will receive the vasty deep water in return. Combine the water and the resin in the staff and the end result will be a peacekeeper staff.
This quest takes place in the Tox Forest at the necromancers hut. Talk to Marzius Denison (I think that's his name) on the right side of the hut. He will tell you to go kill Rungupp, a fippy-type NPC who runs around yelling that he will kill all erudites. He's a level 6ish troll shaman. Your reward for turning his head into the guildmaster is a rusty dagger.

More mentions of these 2 quests here confirming the npcs and necro hut being populated
http://www.angelfire.com/bc/brentcopeland/toxxulia.html
(look but dont click on this page, has some pop up crap if you click)

Rungupp:
This annoying troll runs around the forest screaming challenges to the Erudites. He can generally be located somewhere along the shore from the bridge to the mountainside. He is fairly tough to kill since he casts blindness on his adversaries. Take his head to Marzius Denison at the necromancer's hut and you will get some money and an item.

Best bet is probably to put the equivalent paineel
necro vendors and trainers here, move them to Paineel on open. At least the quest NPCs are named.

I've looked friggin everywhere this week and every wayback link for Tox bestiaries.

It wouldn't be the first time we corrected place holders when someone came out of the woodwork with their old hard drive of screenshots.. if u do go this route..

You're a saint for caring about doing this and I hope they can be added in a "probably correct but replace as evidence is found" state.

Good progress so far.

Flee the gates of this pathetic city, and join the ranks of most powerful masters of the arcane. Our army grows stronger everyday, and soon we shall overtake Erudin, and then all of Norrath. Take this note to Pluxia Vaktus. She is the current leader of the Heretics, hidden deep in the forest of Toxxulia. Join Pluxia and the Heretics, and one day we shall rule all of Odus.

I don't recall this being the case. I thought they went dubious when Paineel released (or in some patch prior to that). Where did you see that?

What city is safe for Erudite Necromancer to be in other than Erudin ?

https://groups.google.com/d/msg/alt.games.everquest/t4vq6tLGyu0/Mz29-8XA4scJ

6/29/99

Having been operating in Neriak and Freeport for about 20 levels, I
decided to make my way back to Odus to check up on my fellow Heretics in
the Toxxulia Forest. Being an Erudite necromancer, this took some doing.
I had to evade numerous guards and other hostile enemies along the way.
Through equal parts caution and luck, however, I finally managed to
reach my place of origin: Erudin. The Erudite guards glowered at me just
as dubiously as they ever did and Toxxulia still looked like a forest
that lay beneath a sea of Mountain Dew. Everything was as I remembered.
I was home.

So it's not lost, this newsgroup post has partial quest text for necro quests in the Toxx necro hut:

4/19/99

>> 5) The tox necro quest given by Gorjhin Sorqez contains the key phrase
>> [forbidden circle of magic], but i haven't been able to get him to
>> respond to any of the standard questions. Does anyone know if this
>> broken or what is the exact sentence I should use?
>>
>
>didnt try this one, what exactly does he say?

he says this after doing a Hail:

Yes. Greetings to you. This is no place for the wear adventurer. We
are a humble gathering of sorcerers. If you do not follow the
[forbidden circle of magic]. Then I suggest you walk away while you
still can.

I tried a "what is the forbidden circle of magic" and "i follow the forbidden
circle of magic", etc., etc.

>
>> 6) The tox necro quest given by Pluxia Vaktus says I should find the
>> entrance to Kerra Ridge (I am assuming this is the entrance to the kerra
>> zone) and wait for an Antonican slimeball. Well i hung around the tox
>> side of the entrance to kerra for an entire Norrath day, with an
>> occasional roaming of the shoreline, and nobody showed up (I even
>> restarted the quest just in case it might have timed out). Am I at the
>> right place or do I need to hunt those non-kerran NPCs in the kerra zone?
>> Or is just another broken quest?
>>
>
>probobly broken.... what did Pluxia say to do besides that? just stay there?

after some standard intro text by pluxia with a key phrase I say "i will
perform a small act" and she replies:

Then it shall be an act of loyalty to the Heretics. Within Toxxulia find
the entrance to Kerra Ridge. Within shadows you shall lay in wait. We
heard rumors of the vile Kerran getting assistance from Antonican slime.
Find and behead this man. Return the head to me.

So basically I have to bring back the head, just like the Rungupp and poacher
quests, I even tried to give her a poacher head, but she didn't like that.

You say, 'hail Marzus Demsion'

Marzus Demsion says 'You have entered the private sanctum of the Heretics. If it is a battle you wish, then do so. If you [study the art of necromancy], then we welcome you.
You say, 'I study the art of necromancy'

Marzus Demsion says 'Continue your studies. Do not be as most and shun the most powerful circle of magic. If you are a skilled at the art then you should be weary of all Erudites within Erudin and if you are an apprectice at the art then I fear those and add [Rungupp] along with it.

You say, 'Who is Rungupp?'

Marzus Demsion says 'Rungupp is a young shaman troll who often can be found blocking passage across the bridge to all young erudites. Rather than exterminate the beast, we use him as a test for our young necromancers. We invite all young Heretics to attempt to [defeat Rungupp].

You say, 'I will defeat Rungupp.'

Marzus Demsion says 'Then go test your strength young necromancer. Defeat Rungupp, chop off his head and return it to me. If this is accomplished I shall reward you. Good luck.

---

Marzus Demsion says 'So you have defeated the troll called Rungupp. You have past the test. We shall resurrect him for another young necromancer. As for you, take this. It was once mine and is now yours. Welcome to the circle of the Heretics.

Mining caps:

You say, 'hail Talrigar Eklorin'

Talrigar Eklorin says 'This is no place for adventures of any sort. You had best leave before your bones join in on my private task. Heed my words, unless of course you are a [practitioner of the black arts].

You say, 'I am a practitioner of the black arts.'

Talrigar Eklorin says 'So you are a fellow necromancer? You have chosen the most powerful circle of magic. You are wise. I seek to employ a young necromancer to [seek out two mining cap's].

---

Talrigar Eklorin says, 'Speed up the digging my pet's!!

a skeleton says 'We will speed up when you return our Mining Cap's. There is falling rocks all over this place!! We could get killed!!

a skeleton says 'We are not your pets!!

Talrigar Eklorin says, 'How many times must I remind you,.. YOU ARE ALREADY DEAD!! I shall find a young apprentice to [seek out the mining caps].

a skeleton says 'Hunhu!! Yeah, sure. Whatever you say.

a skeleton says 'You jest!! Just get us our Mining Caps's and we will work faster.

---

You say, 'I seek out two mining cap's'

Talrigar Eklorin says 'Somewhere within this forest are two Mining Caps. They are nothing more than cloth caps which I used to fake my summoned pet's working within the cave nearby. They were atolen by a couple of kobold scouts. Return these caps to me and I shall reward thee. Maybe even with knowledge of Necromancy.

---

Talrigar Eklorin says 'Good work. I can now silence the continual whining of my skeletons. Here young apprentice, your reward. Ask for nothing more.

Those are the ones that start in Toxx. There are more on that page that start in Erudin, that have complete text, if that's needed.

According to this site, the reward for turning in Darla Starfire's head to Pluxia Vaktus in the hut is ... a torch:

Darla Starfire/torch - female guildmaster (forget her name) in the necro hut. She wants you to kill Darla Starfire, a level 5ish npc who is supplying the hated Kerrans. Your reward for turning in her head is a torch. Another lucrative quest.

The reward given by Marszus Denison for the Rungupp quest (mentioned in the quest text) is apparently a rusty dagger:

This quest takes place in the Tox Forest at the necromancers hut. Talk to Marzius Denison (I think that's his name) on the right side of the hut. He will tell you to go kill Rungupp, a fippy-type NPC who runs around yelling that he will kill all erudites. He's a level 6ish troll shaman. Your reward for turning his head into the guildmaster is a rusty dagger.

Worked on some of this today.

Added some of the missing script details posted above and created the palace couriers/Jonly Smithin. Added guild tunic drop possibility, reward from Pluxia (would be nice to have her hail dialogue and/or reward text for tunics), and faction.

Also I'm not sure when these npcs stopped spawning but I guessed sometime around Paineel launch.

Posting some links here so they don't get lost.

Japanese site has several of these quests with full dialogue.

Heretics Rungupp quest:

Already had the Rungupp quest, I think from that same site. Indifferent or better.

Mining caps:
Added interaction between Talrigar and the skeletons.

This npc should be named Donla Starfire. Her name is misspelled all over the place, still trying to get enough info.
