They normally don't pull the plug abruptly. Exp bonus going away as a byproduct of the downtime is likely. As the reason for the server going down, notsomuch.

Well you can't play a Melee there solo very well. Chanter, Druid, Wizard, maybe Mage. If you don't play a toon that can Bind you will spend half your life running back to Corpse.

My guess would be didn't have a chance to clear the log, so it crashed and wasn't actually brought down on purpose. He said he didn't have a chance to set up the automated process yet when it crashed on Friday, so I'm guessing this is the same issue No clue though, just a guess.
