View Full Version : You cannot attach a debugger while playing Project 1999.

So at first I was having the WinEQ problem with EQ crashing after the update a day or two ago and now after their most recent update I am getting, "You cannot attach a debugger while playing Project 1999." Does anyone know a fix for this by chance or what could be causing it?

Uninstall MQ2.
Well let me be more helpful. A 'debugger' is something that enters the process/dll being loaded in order to understand what's going on, typically.
I don't know how advanced WinEQ is but if any foreign process/object is injecting itself into your client (like MQ2) then this could register as a 'debugger'.
Or you could just be running with a debugger, but I have no idea why you would do that.

For one, August, I don't use MQ so your smartass comments don't help anything. Would something in the EQClient.ini file somehow enable a debugger to supposidly 'start-up' with WinEQ? Or does WinEQ somehow have a debugger option that I cannot find? Like I said it worked fine and then I tried to change my options in eqlient.ini to what Bamzal (I think his name) was saying could possibly work? It seemed those changes were only for resolution though. Any suggestions?

Our anti cheat doesn't allow a debugger to attach to the client. This has always been the case on P99.

I don't think anyone is actually trying to load a debugger. It is just a symptom of the wineq update/project1999 update. They are not jiving very well.
I am getting the debugger message when I try to launch Project1999 through wineq2, and I am definitely not running a debugger.
The weird thing is that everything is working fine on my sons Windows7 machine, but my Windows8 doesn't like the two new updates.

Ansar: Same here. I can run the game fine without WinEQ except for the random glitch that happens and I can't get nilbog's command to work even with the correct file paths put in the command. Which is why I highly prefer WinEQ.

I prefer wineq because it recovers from UAC prompts, where as the native version will only show a black screen until I camp out.

If you don't install into the c:\Program Files folder then you wouldn't have to worry about UAC. Reinstall in something like c:\games or something instead.

I didn't say I had WinEQ or Project1999 installed in the ProgramFiles directory, which I do not.
If I am running the native Project 1999 everquest client and ANY UAC prompt occurs, I get stuck with a black screen in the native Project 1999 client, which forces me to camp out and log back in. If I am running WinEQ and ANY UAC prompt occurs, the game recovers and I don't have to camp out.

I don't have my installation in C:\program files or any other "default" windows directory and still have this problem. I'm not sure how accurate this quote is, or maybe I'm just a one off case.
I didn't say I had WinEQ or Project1999 installed in the ProgramFiles directory, which I do not.

As for this part, not a solution but a work around, if you choose not to turn off UAC (like myself) you can usually recover from the black screen by pressing Alt + Enter three times on a Windows box. This takes me to full screen (black screen still) then back to windowed and I'm no longer dealing with a black screen.

I can verify this as well, something is causing Red99 to crash saying that debugger message. Hope this gets fixed from either side of the coin, dunno who's patch broke it.

could windows 10 be trying to inject something into the launch batch file?

cannot attach error with Windows 10 can mean you have updates waiting to be installed. Powering off your comp will not install the updates, you must restart for the install to go through after which you should be able to login. Most of us from Windows 7 are used to Shutting down and expecting the updates to be installed when we start the comp back up, apparently in 10 they wanted to avoid nailing us with the 1 of 289 updates needs to install before you can power me off or I'll corrupt your os hehe

Thanks for posting the update about AVG--I made an exception in AVG for the install folder and it's working again.
For anyone else who is interesting...
To make an AV exception:
1. Open the AVG Antivirus Console
2. Click on "Options" in the upper-righthand corner of the console and select "Advanced Settings"
3. Click on "Exceptions" from the list on the left, the in the right-side panel, click on "Add exception".
4. For "Exception type:", choose "Folder" then Browse to your "Sony" install directory for EQ.
5. Click on "OK" to add the exception
6. Play EQ1999 again!
One thing that should be tested to see if it works is to have made the exception type an "Application or File" type and only exclude the Launch Titanium batch file so that it's not excepting an entire directory from protection.

Ok, I'm hitting the same wall. I played yesterday and I have installed nothing new.
I have windows 10, Windows Defender, and MBAM installed.
New thing that happens: When I try to open EQ my system gives me a black tile saying:
"Press Win + Alt + R" to take a screenshot. It's never done that before. This tiles sits right over the error message about not using a debugger...
Any Ideas?
Edit: That black tile is from windows' new "Game Bar". I have gone into the registry and completely disabled it. Still getting a debugger error.

Uh oh, me too. There was a windows 10 update recently, but now I am worried that I may have Malware or something that is interfering. I have not installed any new programs, and have never used any game altering hacks.

I found that the Windows 10 Xbox game overlay app was causing this debugger error to pop-up for me. I removed it from the system using the following powershell command and rebooted. Issue was gone.
Within powershell:

Most likely ya done absolutely nothing wrong !! Like myself I never added anything to my computer at all & got this error !! Hell I'm not even familiar with a debugger, what it does , or what would be considered a debugger program. However, I found out it was my AVG anti virus protection program that done it after an update!!! So if ya have AVG open it up, click on options, then scroll down to advanced settings & click on that , then click on Exceptions on the left hand side. Then click on the "add exception" button , & then use the browse button to locate your file folder for Project 1999. This took care of it for me!!! Hopefully this helps!!!

I'm not going to uninstall my AV. That is not an acceptable solution in this era, and hasn't been in 20 years.
I have attempted to disable shields for a few minutes. I have reloaded the spell file. I have made the entire p99 folder an exception in the AV.
Is P99 about to become a server of the past? No more attention to the future of AV's? Perhaps this is part of the agreement with DB so there would be no backlash? I don't know, but I haven't been able to find an official solution to this problem and it's a little irritating. :)

It's rather ironic that you say this isn't an acceptable solution in this era seeing as third party active antivirus has been an unnecessary resource hog for quite some time now. My theory is the anti cheat is seeing your AV as a possible risk. The anticheat scans your active memory for data mining software. The official solution is to get a halfway decent antivirus instead of the garbage you are currently using. Malwarebytes is one that comes to mind.

I agree with your theory, but I've been using the same AV for a time (before I began P99 and during my time playing P99). If the anticheat now recognizes a part of the AV as a threat, how is that the responsibility of the AV development team? Or did I misunderstand that it was a P99 update which began this issue?
I am not a person whose online activities put my pc at a high level of risk. So, I may continue to work with my AV (maybe turning off the participation in their research data mining) and see if P99 will be happy, or maybe I won't. I don't get to play that much anyway.
Thanks for the response. ;)
*Edit* Just for others use - I did get to login and choose server by disabling shields and putting the p99 folder in 'safe sites' or whatever your AV might call it. But, then I kept getting an error message which I will post later this evening once home. The error message was between server select and character screen.

Yes, it worked for me as well.
I was meaning to get back here and post that the second error was not caused by the anticheat code and any AV. It was because I had replaced a larger WS monitor with a smaller one. In the ini I had set reso at 1920 and full screen. The older/smaller monitor caused p99 to try and open in a windowed setting(I assume) causing a crash. Once I edited my ini file to 1050, all was well. :)
Thanks for the responses everyone!

pulls process headers is why it's being flagged.
Gmail/yahoo/paypal pages contain your email in the header. Open a browser. That bar at the top is your process header. This makes busting RMT a lot easier especially if it's from a sting. Tired of good software being maligned and trash talked for working as intended because nerds want to sound smart.
"Get malwarebytes" is laughable really. Yeah let's downgrade protection on the advice of some nobody telling you the anticheat only does a checksum within the EQ folder only. If that was the case it wouldn't be flagged.
Trust the staff or uninstall pretty simple.
Add EQ folder to your anti virus exception list. Worked here.
I wanted to come back and play and was getting this error, this worked for me :D...sad it had to be this way but it is what it is.

I tried disabling the Firewalls on my antivirus and it works. added an exemption to the file path and now it works without disabling anything.

I have AVG - but I can't get past step 1.

Avast causes this issue. if you don't exclude your game directory in virus vault /options /general

Got no AV but I sometime run into this. The rare time when this happens, I have to restart windows, eq is stuck in this "no debugger" thing if not...

I did end up figuring it out, i had to make a exception on both my antivirus and firewall.

So at first I was having the WinEQ problem with EQ crashing after the update a day or two ago and now after their most recent update I am getting, "You cannot attach a debugger while playing Project 1999." Does anyone know a fix for this by chance or what could be causing it?
Still facing the same problem...x

This is due to your anti-virus and/or firewall blocking a file from running. You need to exempt this process in both, which should fix the issue.
