Or even Bow (for the archer) and Bow (for the gentleman)

Edit: Just a comparison of the same word with two completely different meanings but pronounced differently. I know I didn't include an "oe" ending version.

Sow, essentially: "So". I have heard people call it "SAL" which still makes me wonder where the fuck they came from, everyone calling it SAL seems to be from jersey.

I always loved English class, I completed AP English both junior and senior year in high school, but I'm no English major. It's really not my place to argue this as I would probably provide incorrect points. I dislike the English language because of the multiple contradictions it has within. "I before c except after e."

My best friend irl pronounces it like the pig sow. I pronounce it like to sow a field with seed. We grew up in the same mid-Florida region. I don't know what happened in his life to lead him to such poor pronunciation, but it can't be his region.

This one is clear cut.

Sow like a pig is a noun, sow like planting seeds is a verb.

The spell SoW is a noun, not a verb. Therefore it is pronounced like a female pig.

Walter Melon

I've figured with the acronym being SoW, more emphasis should be put on the capital 'W' than with a pronunciation that matches "so". You're attempting to communicate Spirit of Wolf, after all.

Needle... thread. Or more precisely, the planting reference.

Like Neil said:
"We sow the seeds.
Nature grows the seeds.
Then we eat the seeds."

The pig thing is just something my mind never connects to. I can probably count on one hand the number of times in my life I've referred to a female pig as a sow, and it just feels awkward.

Lol, why is there so much argument about word pronunciation (e.g. tow vs. toe, bow vs. bow) when SoW is an acronym. There's no way to definitively prove your pronunciation is right or even proper when you're dealing with an acronym - it just is what it is depending on the person.

Why would you make an "uh" sound with O? Correct pronunciation is S-OW. If the correct pronunciation was "S-EW", it would be spelled SeW. Anyone can look at SOW and understand how to pronounce it without additional information. "S-EW" requires explanation why it is being pronounced that way. :D

Telin
07-30-2013, 02:22 PM
I usually call it by its full name when reading the acronym. However, I like the more unique pronunciation since sew and so are very common.

Luethar
07-30-2013, 02:55 PM
Actually it can go both ways. Here is the definition from Dictionary.com with the pronounciatins: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/sow?s=t&path=/

Could be either? Now is that eeether or iiither?

It's an acronym so the pronunciation is "Spirit of Wolf". ;)

Personally I'm in the pig camp...it's just the way that sounds right to me. I've had friends say SoW as "so" and I consider both correct if you're going to pronounce the acronym.

You're completely ignorant. None of those are correct.

It has been pronounced the following way since FOREVER and you're dumb if you say it otherwise.

SEW

KAY-NOS... I dont know where the f you get the qway when there is clearly no W sound in Qeynos.

Luke-lin or Luck-lin... if you say Loose-lin you have downs syndrome

People who live in cities and have educations say them all this way... people living in middle-america say them your way.
I'm not going to explain why, you people who disagree are just retarded. GG enjoy in-breeding.

gotrocks

^^ wow, this guy (erectus) takes the fictional pronunciation of words far too seriously.

KAY-NOS... I dont know where the f you get the qway when there is clearly no W sound in Qeynos. This quote is here in case you try to change your post later when you realize how foolish and 'inbred/retarded/middle-american' you are compared to us people 'living in cities with educations who all say it the right way'

And by the way erectus, you educated genius you, you paragon of enunciation and pronunciation, you elegant intellect you, you're fucking wrong about how 'kaynos' is pronounced, which makes you not only uneducated and inbred, but also gloriously stupid for trying to insult everyone when you dont even know what you're talking about.

Qeynos is pronounced 'KEE-nOS' (as in NOS that you put in a car to make it go faster). And before you argue about how smart you are and all that other stupid bullshit, here's a link to a youtube video that has SMED (you know, the lead producer on EQ, im sure he's an uneducated inbred whatever other stupid insult you decided to hurl at us neanderthals) at around 2:15 in the video pronouncing 'kaynos' as 'KEE-nos'.... along with every other member of the EQ dev team. so, you know, check what you're saying before you spray your drivel all over our forums, thanks. Fairly certain you're wrong about the other two, but i'm just too tired to verify right now. Judging by your arrogance and general lack of fact checking before hurling insults, however, its safe to assume you're incorrect.

Also, since when did server chat become so negative? usually when threads devolve into this they get moved right away, so far more than one thread has turned into a flame war and hasn't been shipped off to rnf... hmmm....
