When casting on multiple mobs the number of waves is reduced, dependent upon the number of mobs apparently. Generally get two waves with 2 mobs, one wave with 4 mobs.

I noticed Rain of Lava behaving like this also, hit 3 targets and only did 2 waves instead of 3.

Works what way? It doesn't always cast the same number of rains. Sometimes i'll get three waves on 2 mobs, sometimes i'll get 2 waves on 2 mobs, sometimes i get 2 waves on 4 mobs, sometimes i get one. Whats the logic here?

On EQmac all rain spells will hit a maximum of four targets in up to three waves.
Say you casted a rain on one mob, your rain would damage the mob three times, in three waves then stop.
Say you casted a rain on a pack of four mobs: your rain will damage each of them once.
Say you casted a rain on three mobs: your rain will damage each of them once, and then ONE of them will be hit for a second wave, taking damage again.
Say you casted a rain on two mobs: your rain would hit and damage those two, then a second wave would activate and hit those two again.

The provided examples don't even make sense considering 3 waves of 4 mobs max. Not sure why your posting that as the examples. Also, how does explaining the way eqmac does it prove anything here?

RAIN SPELL LINE ASSESSMENT, By Nicolbolas (1/28/2001)
Comment: Rain spells are the only AoE spells to allow a larger potential damage-per-creature than Shocks, but they have an annoying damage cap. They will generate a maximum of 4 hits (or "ticks", as people often say). If there are not enough creatures in the area of effect to take the 4 hits immediately, the remaining hits will occur in a second round, 3 seconds later, on the same creatures; and again in a third (last) round if needed. So, either:
- you hit 1 creature 3 times (if it is patient enough to take the 3 hits), and the fourth hit is lost, so you don't use the spell fully (unless another creature comes under the Rain just before it's over); but you get roughly the same damage/mana ratio as with Shock;
- you hit 2 creatures 2 times, and you get the best efficiency (roughly 10% damage/mana bonus versus Column in the same situation);
- you hit 1 creature 2 times, and 2 creatures 1 time, and this starts looking like dilution,

Rains do damage in 3 waves to max 4 targets. Show me where it says otherwise according to dev team or patch note because allakazam and lucy say 3 waves 4 targets.

Good call... Never remembered that. This post is from velious but with never no patch notes it has to be classic. Read post from nov 24th 2001.

You also get two area effect spells at this level. The first type are rain spells. These are very good against 1-3 enemies. Against a single enemy a rain spell will hit 3 times. Against 2-3 enemies your rain will hit twice. Against 4 enemies you rain will hit once. Against more than 4 enemies your rain will only hit 4 of the enemies. The second type of AoE spells hits all enemies once. These AoE's are good against 4 or more enemies.*
Read his whole post you find this. He also brings up alot of other facts that were classic during the time period
