1 - Final Fantasy 4 (2 in the U.S.) - This ties into the wisdom teeth thread! I first played this when I was doped up after having all my wisdom teeth out. I got totally lost in that game. Still my favorite FF game to this day.
2 - Chrono Trigger - I can't believe they pulled off those graphics on the SNES - amazing story, great characters.
3 - Mech Warrior for the SNES
4 - Rock and roll racing for the SNES
5 - EQ
Runners up would be:
DAoC - I almost said this over EQ - such an amazing game.
FF6, ff7/8/9
Super Mario Kart - best played with friends.
Also any of the first gen fighting games for the PSX, Tekken, Toshinden, Soulblade - getting a bunch of friends over, getting blitzed and beating the tar out of each other was always a good time.
I think most of my choices are based on the times and the situation in which I played the games. It is too hard to pin down my favorites, I definitely love the ones I listed but if you asked me again tomorrow I might list 5 different ones. I have been playing video games too long to narrow it that much!
1. Donkey Kong Country 2
2. Megaman X 1-3
3. System Shock 2
4. ES3 Morrowind
5. Zelda Majora's Mask
Kinda "meh" on the order, might be up n down on some!
And yes DKC2 is best game ever. What do you do after making a legit platformer about monkeys shooting out of barrels? Add pirates. Win.

Chrono Trigger is next on my list of games to play. I still never beat FF8 so I'm doing that again. I got stuck at the fucking Temple/Castle right after you come down from the space station.

Listing favorites can be a bit subjective, as a game does not necessarily have to be good in order to be a favorite, ir just needs to hold a certain amount of significance. And I agree with above, we should leave out EQ, because it being on the list is why the vast majority of us are here in the first place.
With that said, and not necessarily in any particular order:
1) SNES Zelda - Link to the Past
2) SNES Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
3) PC Deus Ex
4) PC Battlefield 1942
5) Arcade Cyberball 2072
Honorable mentions to Half Life, Baldur's Gate, and the flash game Creeper World
Edit: Oh yeah, FF7. Can't believe I left that out. Prolly leaving others out too, oh well.

I'm not going by a single game for my choices I am going by a series of games. Example instead of just Everquest or just Everquest Ruins of Kunark. Everquest would include all of it's expansions.
1) Dark Age of Camelot and its expansions
2) Heroes of Might and Magic series (except 4)
3) Diablo series
4) Kain/Blood Omen series
5) Everquest and its expansions.

Legend of the Dragoon
I heard amazing things about this game and always wanted to play it, i bought it and dont think i made it past the 20-30 minute mark. Something about the battle system, the squares and having to time hitting a button before your turnbased attack lands, like squalls gunsword. That really turns me off in an rpg.
still need to play it though
Zelda OoT is still and will always be my favorite game of all time. I must have played it from start to finish over 50 times throughout the years

I was not a fan of oot, not sure why but the whole 3rd person zelda didnt do it for me. Still prefer the topographical style of old.
and it just didn't feel like a zelda
OoT was revolutionary for the Zelda line, not sure what you mean

Plot low point of the game imo.
You're just in some random cave and at the end of it you run into this guy you've never heard of/seen before and one of the characters in your party goes "that man killed my father I'll never forgive him!". Then you beat him and afterwards he goes all "okay sorry your dad was awesome and I respected him!" and the characters all forgive him as he dies. Repeat several times as game goes on.

lol I didn't hear great things about the story, more about the gameplay that characters turn into dragoons in battle gaining loads of strength, or able to summon dragons or something. Just a cool idea i wanted to see but couldn't get into it.

OoT was revolutionary for the Zelda line
That's why they only put out 2? 3d zelda's then went back to topographical =)
Not that it matters zelda died with gamecube (4swords was actually kind of fun) and nintendo is just dead altogether, though the wiiu looks interesting i highly doubt there will be enough solid titles to keep it afloat. Like most nintendo consoles they don't focus on their best titles instead its..kiddy crap i think
*edit*
Trying to remember what exactly turned me off from oot, its been years, i think it was the combat. Trying to do anything with that n64 controller was a horrendous task. Also the lock on to targets thing. I could go through link to the past without dieing once, and if I really tried i could probably do it without taking damage. In oot id take collision damage just trying to get up to it and hit it without side rolling or some nonsense. My fault obviously the game was perfect...

1. Elder Scrolls III Morrowind.
2. Final Fantasy VII
3. Heretic
4. Heroes of Might and Magic III
5. (I count these as one game because that's just how good the SNES was)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV, Zelda LTTP, Super Metroid, Megaman X, Probably some other SNES games but I'm tossing this together quickly.

I loved legend of the dragoon because it was the first game that I ever played. It was my very first video game. I admit the plot had lots of problems, but i loved the shit out of the gameplay, and the powerful attachments I had with the characters. When one of them dies I got sad, when one of them betrays the group it feels like I got backstabbed by the same person. It was the first and only game I have ever become emotionally attached to. I have never felt a very wide range of emotions playing any other game. Fucking love the goosebumps I get loading it up.

Shadowrun is definitely on my to-do list.
Is Legend of Mana = Secret of Mana?
And whoever mentioned Legacy of Kain, that's another one I need to play.
Shadowrun on Genesis still plays well. Definitely play it. It's one of the first kind of open world, non-linear RPG's. There are tons of fun side activities like Shadowruns where you break and enter into big corporate HQ's and those are all open ended too. You can hack your way thru door locks, or run and gun thru security, or use magic to invis past guards, etc. All the deck upgrading and hacking is totally awesome too. Good way to make money.
It might be a little obtuse without having any nostalgia for it and just kind of knowing how things work but once you figure it out it can be a ton of fun. I love that setting and still go back and play that emulated on my PSP once a year or so. Can't wait for Shadowrun returns. If that game disappoints me I don't know how I'll be able to go on.
Legend off Mana is an offshoot of the Secret of Mana series. Another kind of open ended RPG. It's basically a non-linear series of short stories all set in the same weird world. It doesn't have a typical band of teenagers save the world storyline like every other boring ass JRPG. All kinds of wacky crafting subsystems and pet breeding and stuff. Combat is more side-scrolling than 3/4 top down like Secret of Mana (think Golden Axe/Streets of Rage style).

Play them both. Running through 9 myself again currently. I play them all about a once a year.
FF8 was one of those that I never beat the first time through. I liked the story, but disliked the system. When I picked it up again a year later I enjoyed the hell out of it. Ultimecia's castle is a real pain in the ass though, no surprise you stopped at that point!

I mean it sucked cause I was literally stuck. I couldn't even grind any levels. I literally crashed into her castle and couldn't beat those first people that attacked (the Turks wannabes). It pissed me off so bad. Wasted hours to just be stuck on 3 unbeatable douchebags.
