What was your EQ live experience like, and why did you like it so much that you decided to play an emu server to recreate it? Really, I'd like to know. Share :)
For me, I think it's a combination of things. The pvp battles over raid content were epic, and the group vs. group stuff was always a blast. Solo pvp was ofc awesome too. I don't think I'll ever forget this one fight I had, with an epic dark purist rogue. I beat him by jousting with Selo's on my bard (and using regen, DS, dots and stuff), and after I killed him he thanked me for the great fight, because most bards outdoors would just kite melees around.
But more than all of that, I liked feeling that there was a reason for me to be fighting, and I liked that there were reasons for others not to fight. TZ and VZ had what I felt were cool teams/FFA hybrid servers, allowing sort of a RP base for us players to build on. A friend of mine got me playing, and he was an established raiding member of the "Light Team", which was composed of most short/elf/human team players, and was probably the server majority team. He wanted me to join him from the day I was introduced to the game, but as I leveled, talked to people and started to get a feel for things, I began to change my mind.
I felt bad for the dark team. We would always kill them on sight, and I wondered why. I mean it made sense with the lore and everything, but my name was yellow and I was exping with purples and blues while kosing oranges. To group with an orange would make me a "crossteamer", but wasn't that a little hypocritical? So I decided I'd become a bad guy, and I started to kill the purples and blues; especially the dwarves and their lame faces.
And it really did make me a bad guy! People would angry at me, for killing what they felt were the wrong people. I was like a traitor to my team; humans and shorts would hunt me down and even other elves would refuse to group with me. A few times over the course of my EQ life, I'd kill some "lights" grouped with elves, and then the elves would talk shit to me. It was great. Eventually I was picked up by a group of like-minded elves, and together we did a pretty top-notch job trolling Norrath.
Did you guys know that there was once a guildwar on VZ, between <Illuvitae> (evil elves) and <Elven Royal Guard> (light team elf-only guild, allied with other elf/human/short guilds)? Elf on elf action, over hardcore videogame ideals. Tunare wept, and the Faydark was never the same again.
That was my early EQ experience, and I think by contrast it expresses nicely what is wrong with Red99:
YOU GUYS ARE DOING IT WRONG!!
I'm not saying we should split into light vs. dark teams to emulate what VZ did right; what we should be doing is making efforts toward creating our own unique sandbox experience here. The great thing about sandbox games is that they offer limitless opportunities for fun, and the blah thing about them is that people impose limitations on themselves because we're all unimaginative and lazy. I think Nirvana composed an entire album about the plight of sandbox MMOs; you should look into it.
This is a recruitment post, sort of, for <Serenity>. Serenity is a lot of different things for a lot of different people. I can't speak for all of them, but main reason I wear the tag proudly (other than the friends I've made in guild) is that we're something unique, that the server desperately needs.
Our population is kind of low, even after we got the pvp text and xp increase. It's my belief that we can improve our population, but it will require some nurturing. I'm taking off my murderous elf hat, and putting on my princess tiara now. I'm here for you.
People love classic EverQuest. The success of blue server is evidence of this. Many bluebies (and former Red99 players) have made the claim that they would like to experience EQ pvp, but are held back by the newbie griefing and poisonous attitudes of the playerbase. I think they see the ooc spam and get a sort of one-sided view of who we are, and I don't believe we're all that bad. But someone needs to show them that, if we're to get any of them to make that jump in earnest.
What you do wrong is, simply: grief. Or if you don't grief yourselves, you support it by allowing your friends and guildmates to. Your grief and your apathy hurt the server, and I'm here to tell you that you can be better, if you choose to. If you'd like to join a guild that recruits absolutely everyone that applies, and likes to CC, bindcamp, scam, strip chars, and train random newbies when bored, you're free to join Force. Or Nihilum, or Azrael, or FoH. Really they're all the same, with leaders and members that simply don't care about the plague eating away at the population.
And I'm not trying to badmouth any of these guilds; we're allowed the freedom we have for very good reason, and it's very okay to be the bad guy. I was the bad guy once, and I had a lot of fun doing it. The difference here, is that you're all bad guys. Rallos was FFA, and they had a really interesting anti vs PK dynamic. You're not fighting for any nerdy and awesome ideal like I did on VZ; you're all the same, and it's boring. Nihilum, Force and Azrael could all swap guild names, and what would really be different about them? As far as I can tell, nothing. I know EQ emu pvpers traditionally like to maintain the status quo, and prefer not to do anything that might set them apart from their peers, but I guess that's just not me.
So I've chosen not to join the bad guys this time, and am decidedly a Good Guy. Serenity takes this a step further (without even intending to lol), and is a really great group of people. Goodness grown naturally. I'm of the opinion that it's easier to face grief if you've got some friends with you, and I hope we make more good friends as we level up and make our way into the higher end content. I want to see the server grow, not just in numbers but in societal depth and playstyle variety.
I'd love for you to join us. Being a good guy here is actually really easy; all you have to do is stop letting your friends and guildmates treat people poorly. Serenity isn't an anti-PK guild; we actually love pvp. We're just anti-grief, which simply means following the Golden Rule. Bring the pvp, hold off on the bind camping, training and such.

But this goes beyond /ooc, I wish you luck <Serenity> too serene for my tastes though. I will remain one of the 'bad guys' - Not out to grief, but I'm not out to hold any hands either. And I'm not fighting fair in any slums... I don't like fighting too fair.

Of course the irony here is that you were a supporter of the #1 griefing mechanic implemented on this server from day one till the last day, xp loss in pvp.
The griefers actually took themselves out after box died first time and there wasnt anybody left to kill.
I support the general idea though, i havent got around to playing box again, but when i do, i will join a guild on my alts that protects lowbies from known griefers when i do my pvp funtime time.

i would join your guild if i was a player. seems like the most fun to me. back on VZ first time i got PKd in EQ i was playing my Erudite Mage, and had just hit lvl 8 and gotten invis. i decided to travel. i put EVERYTHING except a noob starter robe in the bank, i left Qeynos, passed through QH and arrived in West Karana. this was the farthest i had traveled up to this point. i knew how zone walls worked early on, and decided to travel by hugging zone walls. Surely this would make my trip much longer, but it would also improve my chances of survival. a fellow adventurer had warned me to take the giant wooden bridge, that could be found by following the shore line. all went well until high pass. being so far from home i didnt wanna risk dying. but for the lil bit of gold i had collected on the way, a player was willing to show me the way to kithicor. more (left) zone wall hugging until FreePort where i got a new robe before discovering the boat to Faydwer. While on the boat i saw a GIANT lizard that conned red, i saw mermaids, i saw a giant giant named Gornit as well as multiple Cyclops, and every mans dream.. an island full of wood elf women. two cigarettes later i was in Butcher and again hugging the zone wall. Kaladim was epic to discover as i came over the hills. the chess board blew my mind, and was around my level, but i continued on to Gfay. eventually i found Felwithe and decided as per my map, than i ran across the world. at the time i didnt know where akanon was, and didnt find Kelethin. but i was the first erudite that many of those elves had seen. i was never as scared and excited over traveling as i was that night, and that night was what hooked me on EQ.
i joined a lightie guild as a noob that was called <Judges of Norrath> we use to raid Nektulos and Ecommons to slay all dark races and loot their items. would do "/shout %T has been Judged" every time a guildie slew some random darkie. one night im minding my business when a dwarf comes and murders me and loots my greater lightstone. needless to say, nerdrage was incomming. my killer logged shortly after, so i proceeded to murder all dwarfs in butcher. after a few hours of camping the lowbies, a midlevel all shorty guild showed up in force to remove me (was First Dwarven Brigade i believe, they were one of the guilds that merged into elders of underfoot later on).
and time continued on. i left JoN to join Sect of Silence. a guild that was not allowed to show their guild tags. we were a rumor for a long time. after SoS became trendy, i joined Northern Crusaders but they quickly merged into Defiant. being in Defiant was epic until Cuchulainn quit and gave the guild to Duhara. i was removed for some choice colorful comments towards an officer, but was quickly recruited by Gruffer to join his guild <Fated>. we were the "bad guys" of the light team. we were the ONLY lightie guild that had the stones to fight Defiant. and we were one of 2 or 3 guilds that joined forces with the Dark race guilds in an (eventually successful) effort to remove <The Twelve Prophets> from Sebilis. it took many weeks of constant fighting, and was the absolute best part of the kunark expansion for me. fighting 12p at sebilis.. anyone that was there will never forget.
After Velious, <Fated> decided they would go 4-team, and merge with Gruffers RL Brothers guild <Dark Defiant Warriors>. at that time me and a RL buddy were talking about doing the same thing, so if Fated was going 4team, i might as well bail and start a 4team guild with two RL friends (Azzuyen/Beholdr & Jericha/Mariska). so we did, and we called it <Macabre>. we HATED luclin. we decided to recruit new players and rerun them through the content (classic through velious). we were hated by the server, we were kill on sight to the server. we could ONLY hunt on Odus (but nobody else was allowed on Odus either), unless we moved in force to a raid. our closest Ally was <Vexare> and they were great with helping us get those epics we needed.
Eventually i took over Beholdr and Jericha quit. <Macabre> slowly died, and most of the members joined with exiles from <Vexare> and <Silent Souls> to form <Torrent>.
Sadly <Torrent> is where my story ends.
some of you know Keegan, he was Mindbom of the 12 prophets.
Some of you know Daxum, he was our guilds main chanter in <Macabre>
The teams aspect was fun because it allowed me to have interesting pals in strange places. for example, there was another Erudite Mage in the 12 prophets named Tricky. we could not attack each other and ended up becoming pals, friendly banter about who's guild was better, as well as a bit of extra help on mage infos.

Absynthe the only advice I can give is be a character you can enjoy.
Be a race you can get into and a class you can see yourself enjoying. Thats the only way you will really be able to get through the hard times is if you love your character. Don't make a character you hate just to "pharm for your real character later" it isn't worth spending a week of actually /played time on a pharm alt you don't enjoy playing.
Level 1-50 is a lot of fun. Enjoy it, grind away and make friends when you can along the way. If you try to bum rush everything you will wind up joining the rest of the dissatisfied washouts. Make the most of the server for what it is. Always hope it will become better, and do what you can to get it there, but if you can't enjoy it now then just forget it.

For Gustoo this boils down to Ogre War =)

Thanks fame, though I wasn't really begging for cash not that I would turn it down either lol. More or less forgot what classes work in pvp this era. It has been years but if not mistaken Mages/druids were top of the food chain before super high resists came into play? (I know theres always a guy who says every class is awesome if played right I know this I have played most but some are just easier and more fun to pew with then others.)
Sorry not hi jacking the thread, I am interested in joining an active guild the no /ooc at low lvl makes for lonely grinding hahaha.
Only played on Rallos and Sullon, where real ballers rolled!
