Call me old fashioned, but what's wrong with playing it on a PC or laptop? ;)

I play on a surface pro @ 60 fps for 85% of the time. In EC its a bit lower but nothing to complain about. I love it. Probably the best investment Ive made in a long time. Its a goddamn laptop that looks like a tablet. i5, 4gb ram, integrated 4000 intel but whatever. it works great!

Cool, and nothing wrong with playing on a PC. I actually prefer it. But for those of us who work or are out of the house often, it is nice to have the option to game.
(I get to play maybe 1 day a week now.)
Tablets in this fashion are the future. Having multi-platform capabilities(what Windows is doing), is closing the gap between the PC and Tablet.

I agree. But could care less if it runs the games I want to play.

I used to play on a single core 1ghz netbook with a 700ms ping. could only be better on something as fast as the surface

Hell I would think a Cellphone would have more power today than the PC we had in 1999 running EQ. :D

In terms of simple calculations per second, my 2 year old now ancient galaxy s2 is most likely a couple hundred times faster than my pc from 99

Surface Pro is possibly the best $1000 EQ machine I have ever bought. I was playing EQ in one of my college classes.. great investment for boring lectures.
I will see about getting pictures of it playing EQ.

If you are experiencing problems playing EQ on a Windows 8 PC / Surface please PM me with what error you are seeing and what the conditions are where you are experiencing a crash. I can get the information to the right people and roll out a fix if it is a broad impact bug.
Cheers,

I am running EQ on Windows 8 with no issues on a desktop PC. I did have to full around with allowing it to run as Admin and set compatibility to XP service pack 3 though.
There were issues prior to doing those things. I would crash zoning sometimes and almost always crash when I logged out as well. All those troubles are no more however.

Extremely doubtful, this is said every few years. Tablets have inherent usability issues
for long periods (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touchscreen#.22Gorilla_arm.22), an external keyboard does help but it will never fully replace a PC. They certainly have their place for things but they won't replace PC's just like 'the cloud' won't replace local storage.
So far as getting it to work, you're out of luck unless it's an x86/Intel based tablet since
EQ binaries would need to be recompiled to work on ARM and most tablets are ARM architecture.

How did you get this to work? I have a new desktop with windows8 as well. I have mine set to run as Admin and compatible to XP service pack 3 like you. I can select a server from the list (project1999 and such) but when I click play everquest, the window resizes to a corner of my monitor and ceases to function. I have to log out of my profile on the computer in order to clear it, as windows8 has some real issues with ending programs that stall out.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Thanks

Looks like you're out of luck with the RT as it's an ARM device (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_RT) unless you can find/steal the original source code for titanium and compile it.
