Hello everyone name is Blake, been a loooong time since I have played eq but its one of the best of all time. Anyways, I was hoping to get some opinions on what would be a good toon to start out playing again. Not looking for handouts just some advice. I started a Druid but good lord does it take a while to level. I think he hit 3 but it took me like an hour and a half for that. Is that to be expected?

Thanks again for your time and I look forward to meeting some of you in game

Yes.

This game is actually challenging. It will only get harder to level.

You get meditate at level 8. Things will get better at that point. Leveling does take time. If you've played other games recently, it may be a shocking difference.

I started druid first, she is level 46. It has been a good first character for me. I've been able to group, but did solo a lot. The experience solo'ing a druid has been faster than grouping. It is nice to have that option.

I'm leveling my main character now, a cleric. She is a lot more dependent than my druid and I spend a lot more time traveling. I've met people, and I am guilded now with people I enjoy grouping with.

Welcome to the server! A druid is a good starting character as you are very versatile. And yes, experience bars in EQ move much more slowly than those in modern MMOs. :D

I got a 5% of a level in an hour and a half last night to put it in perspective for you.

I think levels 1-13 are the worst in the game, by far. Obviously it gets slower as you go up, but at least you're getting loot, grouping with people, questing, etc. Level 1-13 for the most part sees none of that. It is the most monotonous and boring period of the game

Wow I am impressed by the replies I'm getting. That's awesome. I will just enjoy the game for what it is. It's nice to get back that is for sure.

Vadd, I will shoot you a message when I get off work tonight around 6 or est

Thanks a lot all :)

If you can make it to Blackburrow, the gnoll teeth quest yields better experience than just grinding away on mobs. Crushbone belts is ok too, but the belts do not stack.

Once you get level 5 you can start grouping in CB and EC if you want to group, usually makes the experience more enjoyable.

Druids can heal as well as a cleric more or less until clerics get superior heal at 34. Given druid/shaman heals are 4 levels behind, still you should be able to function as a healer in groups long enough to get going on a druid and get to the point where you can solo away for better exp than grouping anyways.

Go through Rivervale to Kithicor Forest (make sure its daytime by checking the /time).

Essentially turn left once you zone in and follow the wall around until you get to a gap in the wall, which is WC

WC - keep running straight ahead along the wall (mind the orcs/dervish cutthroats etc), and into EC.

EC - if you want to get to CB, same idea. All the way down the wall to West Freeport.

West Freeport - Go to East Freeport docks for the boat...then its through Ocean of Tears into Butcherblock. Butcherblock into Greater Faydark and Gfay into CB.

...or get to WC and see if there's any druids that will port you to Butcherblock or even better, any wizards that will port you to Greater Faydark.

...and don't forget to bind :p

No problem. Google "EQ atlas (zone name)" if you need a map at any point to help you get around :)

I prefer using the wiki maps, I know most are from eq atlas but I like the format better on wiki lol

Mapfiend iirc has map packs as well. Uncertain if this breaks ToS, haven't needed maps in a long time, heh.

People shouldn't be born into the game relying on ports to get around... its the makings of a lazy player. Before you know it you've got L20's asking for 96% rezzes.

Oh wait, we're already there :P
