I tried without putting a point into Sense Heading and used it about 20-30 times. Then, I put a point into it and found I had pressed my hotkey for SH approx. 30-40 times. It still remains at 1. This is different from my first toon (Dwarf Paladin) but this is still ongoing with my new toon (High Elf Magician).

and? There is nothing wrong with Sense Heading. It goes up just fine, no questions asked, after the first point is put in.

You can find the answers to your questions in this thread here:

To summarize: Dwarves start with 50 sense heading. You can only skill up on a success. Either spam the button all week hoping for a success that happens to give you a skill point, or dump some points in before trying again.

I have taken 5 characters to 200 sense heading by levels 4 or 5, and all started with a skill of 1.
Sadly, 30-40 times just isn't enough. Though, I was amused when my bard got skillups off his first two uses.

What exactly is the sense heading /command anyway? I never had a button for it.

The slash command is /doability #, where the # corresponds to the location of sense heading on your abilities tab in your action window, and will be 1 through 6.
Or, you can change the commands in options>keys>hotbar1, and assign the location of sense heading on your hotbar to the same key you use to turn or move up. The only way I know of to assign all movement keys to also activate sense heading is to add sense heading to your hotbar multiple times, and assign each location to a movement key.
