I've never played EQ and I was told by a friend that Project 1999 would be more fun than playing the official servers. The problem is that I have not a clue how to play EQ (specifically the 1999 version). I'm not sure what stats I need, what skills I need, or any general knowledge of the game.
My other question is where is this server hosted? It would suck if I downloaded the game only to find out I have 200ms.

Read it. Love it.
I would specifically recommend reading:
http://wiki.project1999.org/Jval2529%27s_Guide_for_People_Coming_from_Modern_M MOs
http://wiki.project1999.org/Players:Newbie
http://wiki.project1999.org/Loraen%27s_Class_Selection_Guide
http://wiki.project1999.org/Choosing_the_Best_Class_for_Your_Playing_Style
... in that order. Also read all of the specific race and class pages to try to get an idea of what class you'd like to make. After you do that, come back here and ask any specific questions you come up with along the ay.
And a ping of 200 would be just fine. This isn't counterstrike, it's not even WoW. It was designed to be played with a 56k (at best) connection and pings of probably 300+.

A lot of people would be jealous, I'd love to start this game again without any knowledge of anything...some of my best experiences included running from Felwithe to Kelethin along the path in the dark in a world that seemed so vast and unpredictable, praying not to see an orc pawn along the way, those atmospheric sounds, the rain...
I'd never have dared to stray off the path, who knew what could be lurking there :p

Thank you for the list! I don't have time to read them at the moment so I'm curious, do they cover builds/guides for classes or is that something I should find elsewhere?

I know exactly what you're talking about. I'm going to try to savor every moment of my first week because the best part of any game is when you first discover it. Hopefully the graphics don't ruin the immersion for me.

Two of the links kind of go into a general overview of how each different class works and the strengths and weaknesses of each class. There aren't really builds in EQ though; you can pick your gear and, if you're a caster, select which 8 spells of all the spells you know you wish to have ready to cast at any given moment, but that's the extent of customization really. Fortunately there ARE a bunch of classes that are each very distinct from any other, and the way you put your class's gear choices and abilities to work is huge in determining how effective it is.
EQ is not a game that is "balanced" in the modern MMO sense of the word. Every class has situations in which it works (or shines), but some classes overall are just better than others.
Those guides + each specific class page on the wiki will give you a pretty good idea of the general capabilities and playstyles of each class though.

This isn't necessarily related to my post but when I try to go the installation guide it links me to the forum, not a forum post. I'm not sure how to get my everquest client to connect to this server.

No worries, you aren't the first that has been confused by that page and the links not working.
Someone with powers should fix that :)

Basically, you need to install EQ Titanium - you can either go buy it (which is what I did), or you can find a means of downloading it.
Next, go to http://www.eqemulator.net/forums and make a forum account. After you make your forum account, click on User CP (Top Left), then click "Login Server" (at the bottom left, under Miscellaneous), then click "Create New LS Account" - this is the username and password that you will use to log into the game.
Once you have it installed, you need to edit the "eqhost.txt" file inside the C:\Program Files\Sony\Everquest folder (just open it with Notepad).
change it to say:
[LoginServer]
Host=eqemulator.net:5998
Save that file.
Now create a shortcut to your desktop (this part is important).
Just right-click your desktop, select New, Select Shortcut.
The first page will ask for the path of the file, put:
"c:\program files\sony\everquest\eqgame.exe" patchme
Then, next, next, finish.
Now, double-chick this new shortcut, and log in with the username and password that you created on the EQEmulator.net's Login Server, and choose the server near the top of the list called "Project 1999". '
and you're in.
Welcome to Project 1999

It all worked until I got to the character selection screen. When I got there it said I was missing spell files and that I needed to get them from the getting started page. I went to the getting started thread and tried to download the EQEmu Launcher because it says it installs the required files for Project 1999 but the page isn't loading. Do you, or anyone else, know where another mirror for the EQEmu Launcher is?

The latest spell files are here: http://www.project1999.org/files/eqchangesv27.zip
Just paste those into your EQ directory.

You'll need to download the patch files for the game and install them. Whenever there's a patch it gets put in the Announcements with a link to download the new patch files.
Here's a link to the latest patch announcement.
http://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?t=98761
You'll want to extract the zip into C:\Program Files\Sony\Everquest and overwrite all files.

Thank you to everyone for the help.
EDIT: Weird. After I replaced the spell files a whole different list of servers is on the server list and I can't find the Project 1999 ones.

200 ms should be fine on the pve server. i know euros with 200 ping that play on the red (pvp server) quite fine.
Also very jealous you get to learn this game from scratch. Been playing 10 years on and off for the most part and my best memories are also being level 15, and not knowing much at all about eq.
- what i mean is its not like learning to play wow, and learning the areas. Imo its a whole nother ball game of exploration fun.
also use this website for maps
http://www.classiceq.com/eqatlas/
heres a latout of zone connections for classic and kunark (first expansion)
http://www.classiceq.com/eqatlas/eantonicamap.html east part of world
http://www.classiceq.com/eqatlas/santonicamap.html southern part
http://www.classiceq.com/eqatlas/wantonicamap.html western part
kunark -
http://www.classiceq.com/eqatlas/kunarkzones.html
Once you find a zone and want to look at the creatures and thier loot tables use this -
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/zone.html?mode=bymap
Not classic but for the most part you can find old zones that were not revamped later that still have somewhat usefull info. I used to read this site all day in school.

I remember when I finally got my human Ranger from Qeynos area all the way to EC. It was nighttime and I came on a Troll SK and a DE necro killing the guards. I shit myself, hid behind the inn, and hoped they wouldn't see me and kill me too.
You can't recreate that feeling.

I checked my eqhost file and it's what it should be so I'm not exactly sure why the server's not showing up.
EDIT: They just popped up. There must have been a server restart or something.

Welcome to Project1999!
Try not to let the graphic ruin anything. A lot of the players here played this back in 1999-2001 and the graphics then were state of the art.
The game is not awesome because of the graphics. Its awesome because os the sheer deepth the games goes. The "new" everquest has been babied up. Plane of Knowledge and the portal books makes travel easy.
P99 is great because you still have the sense of danger everywhere. When you have to run from city to city, and camp for gear instead of buying it in a bazaar....
If you stick it out, you will love it!

Trust me, I wouldn't ever refuse to play a game because of it's graphics. I'm more gameplay > graphics I just didn't watch many videos before trying out the game so I wasn't sure what to expect.
EDIT: I'm not sure if this is the game for me. It's pretty confusing and I can't seem to figure out what to do at the start out. The main part that is confusing is the combat. I'm not sure what my songs do or why sometimes my character doesn't attack at all when I'm being hit. I also died and lost all of my items, which I already knew about, but couldn't figure out where my body was so I lost my only weapon.

Me and a buddy started out on the test server...as woodelves. After a week or so of getting lost for hours in the forest and losing multiple corpses I had the bright idea that we should run to odus. No idea why. It was a epic journey...took us all day to run there. And getting through kithkor and hhk as lvl ~16 elves was a miracle.
Great memories from EQ

Are you playing here with your friend that told you about this server? I'm sure he could show you the ropes in-game a little bit. if not you can always ask someone in game or here in the forums with any questions. your character does'nt auto attack when being hit, you have to manually hit your auto attack button by the way

You picked imo the hardest class to play. Followed by enchanter and shaman. Not only difficult to play well..but somewhat gear dependant unless you aoe kite which is a skill all on its own.
I would suggest a mage or necro for your first toon. Easy to master...very powerful solo...and can farm gear for your bard down the road once you have a handle on it. And best of all..you can do all that naked...and who doesnt want to run around with no clothes on?

No he doesn't play I was just asking him for a list of some good MMOs and he mentioned that he used to play this server. He's not necessarily a friend either. He's just someone I was talking to briefly in another game.
