I'll be in Chicago in mid-April for a conference. I am having a HELL OF A TIME finding a hotel for 8 days that won't run me a total of like $1500+. This is probably because I am looking in the Downtown area. The conference is right in the middle of downtown (I think), so I'd reallllllly like to try to find a hotel that is within walking distance (2 miles at most-ish).
If I move 10-15 miles away, hotels are much more affordable. I know Chicago is pretty renown (In the US anyway) for its public transpo system. Just how user friendly is this? Especially for a nub that that never used public transpo in her life. I am not opposed to taking a bus/subway to the venue every day if it's not going to be ridiculous to figure out.
Also, any recommendations for sightseeing / good eateries? Conference is 5 days, but I'll be staying an additional 2 to roam the town.

EDIT: How to use hotwire somewhat effectively - Cross reference the dates/prices with the other hotels you see listed next to the "mystery" price. Be sure to adjust the price. Hotwire always sells their rooms slightly cheaper than on the actual hotel site.

Interesting. For some reason I always had it in my head that those hotel/flight search sites always overcharged.

not really.
Hotel charges say $180/night
Hotwire charges you $160/night
Hotel gets paid $130/night from Hotwire
That's about how it works most of the time.

... The Golden Apple is good for hangover breakfast. ...
golden apple at Lincoln and Wellington?
my good lord, we use to storm that place after we were all done drinking and legally retarded. there'd 10-15 of us on any given night, so theyd put us in the corner near the kids toys. they let us smoke and play with the toys.
once, two of my pals accidentally started some retarded "who will eat the most disgusting things" contest. and before long Diane (waitress) had brought over a bucket because she knew what was coming. long story short, one kid vomited and ate a piece of it. the second kid didnt vomit, so he ate a piece of the first kids vomit, and was crowned the winner.
still to this day never been thrown out of G.A.

Lou Malnati's hands down best chicago pizza in my life long opinion.

Delilahs, has good drink specials, chill clientele, great music etc...
Any busy Taco stand or Thai place that has a line at 3 am is usually a safe bet as far as good eating is concerned.
Delilahs isnt bad
3am taco stands are a 50/50 coin flip, lets be honest here ;)

That's all we do here in northern NJ. If you don't fold your pizza you're some weird outsider who doesn't know how to eat it.
Last time I was in chicago was a few years ago in november. It was cold as fuck. I didn't get to see much of the city because of it but I did go to the aquarium which was good. I don't do the cold which is why I want to get my ass to florida.

If you want a cheap place to eat try the white palace grill, grubby, really fuckin old 24/hour dinner with some of the best and actually decently priced food youll get around downtown area (canal and roosevelt). Always come out of there greasy as fuck needing to unbuckle my belt. Another must-have is a polish sausage from Jim's (I go to one near me, on maxwel(or a block south?) and a block east from halstead.
A really nice place I've been to is Jake Melnicks. It's by chicago and somewhere, look it up, haven't been in a while since I changed jobs.
I wouldn't say the CTA is that user friendly, but it's 2.25 a ride on the bus or train and if you get on another bus or train within two hours it only costs 25 cents for a transfer ride.. Don't bother buying a one day pass, shit is way over priced now, and if youre going to ride the bus twice a day every day I'd say buy yourself a 7-day. Also expect the bus to be late lol.. but you can track the arrival times @ www.ctabustracker.com
Doesn't matter, odds are you'll be shot and killed long before 8 days. I'd recommend hiring someone to go in your place.

Fuck the trains, smells like piss, crowded with assholes, prefer the bus myself. Lou malnatis is a win though, Fogo way over rated :P Definitely find a hotel not in downtown.. can always look up the metra and take that in, will be extra time but youll save some $$. A cool restaurant bar I like also is the elephant and castle.. always expect to pay too much for food downtown though. Shedd aquarium is pretty sweet.
AND AVOID PUDDLES IN THE STREET IF YOURE WALKING. YOU WILL BE SPLASHED. In your face/mouth

As for the red line, I used to semi frequently use it but I actually live like 3 blocks from a blue line stop, I take buses instead usually cause they drop me off closer to where I'm going + I can track them with the website.
Bahhahah also, never been to fogo, but I've been to Brazzaz and I liked that place :p
ALSO I forgot to mention don't leave Chicago without going to harold's chicken. And I'm super fucking serious about Jim's, youll be burping up the nasty taste of rotten sausage and grilled onions for hours its great.
Chicago > all
i've been all around, AR, CA, CO, FL, GA, IL, IN, IA, KY, MI, MN, ND, OH, SD, TN, WI, WY
and Chicago = best food, and fewest natural disasters.
im a big wuss when it comes to earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires, and other dumb shit.
This is true. I think I've let the shit colored snow and wetness get to me... And you know, seeing that same bum that gets out of his wheelchair and walks away at the same time every fucking day, everyone asking you for money or cigarettes constantly every block, or the disgusting lady with her baby (yes actual infant) getting a 'ticket to elgin' every day for a fucking week. Or the nasty homeless white kids with a disgustingly sickly dog that could just call home and live nicely... sigh. And more but I'll stop bitching guess I could be in detroit.
edit: Plus some days chicago just has that smell, like the smell of dump or brownies? Or maybe a mixture of the two. Smelled it today walking home pretty strong.
Gotta love them white sox

I notice you left out NY - specifically NYC. Chicago has good food, but nothing compares to the greater NYC area.
I'll take the occasional threat of a hurricane here over the fucking cold of Chicago too. It's also turning into a murderous shithole. I just heard that they're starting sex ed in kindergarten. WTF. Good food though. They have a good italian influence which is important because without it an area's food just sucks, like in Virginia or other areas I've been to where the food and the restaurants are terrible. Some areas don't even have good chinese takeout, and that's like a staple around here.
you east coasters have to fold your pizza so it feels less like cardboard with shit on top of it. Modern science does not allow for chicago style pizza to be folded. and yar, the Shedd Aquarium is A+ . but we also have the art museum (Ferris Buller), the history museum, museum of science and industry, and the planetarium. and Chicago > Florida because hurricanes :(
We have the best pizza in the world here dude. Chicago style is good but it's a gimmick. NY style pizza is the best in the world and the most imitated. We fold it because we know how to eat it.
Don't even get me started in a pizza war. You will lose. I have the best pizza place for miles around nearby http://www.famousrayspizzanyc.com/Page_entrance.php. I guarantee if you had it you'd instantly recognize all other pizzas as inferior. Pizza is serious business in this italian area I live in.

Chicago deep dish is awesome, but I wouldn't really consider it pizza. I went to school in the midwest (Grinnell, Iowa) so Chicago was only 2 hours away. I ate at all the spots, including Lou's; really good. The best place I had in NYC was Lombardi's. This was the most similar to pizza I had in Italy, only better. Cooked to a cripsy perfection, seasoned, and having an amazingly sweet sauce from the imported San Marzano tomatoes. Also I'm from South Florida so I have no hometown bias.

museum of science and industry is my personal favorite.
and not sure if it counts as a museum but the shedd aquarium is awesome too
Shedd aquarium is pretty boss, haven't been to the dolphin show in years though :(

Don't waste your time at lincoln park zoo, gross. Brookfield zoo > even though its a bit of a travel
Do NOT go on the South side at night, have fun chi is an amazing city

Brookfield is not free. LP is free, and would be in walking distance to her. cubs fans can afford the internet (zing!). and yes, if you go south enough things start to get better. but they get much worse before they get better. and maybe there are more "wanky drunkass douchebags" on the north, but to be fair, we are not offing ourselves in record numbers across the country.. unlike the South and West side which have officially teamed up to make Chicago the murder capital of America

15 miles is way to far to go for public transit, you could stay in a suburb and take a train into the city for sure. It kind of depends on what area of chicago the conference is . downtown you are prolly around 200 a night after everything. parking is a pain as well unless you flew in

this^^ x10
our last mayor was corrupt as fawk. all parking meters street parking was sold to a private company, and unless you find a good "all day" parking deal, the garages are way to over priced.
Trains, Buses, and Taxis will be your best friends in the area.
Gas = 4.17
Cigs = 12.00
fixed ^^.
and how the hell does google searching the suburbs help a person that's not in the suburbs?
When I was internetting our trip up to chicago last time I went, evvvvery site was giving me hotels INSIDE chicago, and mostly downtown near Michigan st. Used google maps, zoomed into to Chicago until the burbs round it had names visible and started searching for hotels in the burbs, found a badass deal in like 5 minutes.

lol what? So since you pull for the socks you'ld tell people you know to hang out on the Southside when they visit? Can't tell if stupid or stupid...
Back when I was making great decisions in life and driving to chicago to pick up white girl we had to stop on the REAL part of the South Side.. wasnt as scared of being around legit bangers as I was sure I'd be robbed and shot one of these times

Also, Bub City, The Bad Apple, Longman and Eagle, Violet Hour, Bangers and Lace are all a lot of fun/good food/drinks. I'd mention more but those are all awesome.

Uno is better than Lou Malnatis, the chain thing doesn't really do it for me. Maybe some locations are better than others, but the one we got from Lou Malnatis made me not want to eat pizza again... well since new years.
Uno was not good. Disappointed.

Unos is a nationwide chain buddy - http://uno.know-where.com/pizzeria/But I think the Uno and Duo downtown were the first two locations? And as someone above states they are arguably the best of the chain. As a sort of EQ-related aside I had pizza there (Unos) with Talenos, Rhaski/Conec, and Cerano back during fanfaire 2000 or something. I have pictures somewhere to prove it.
The Hard Rock Café downtown is kind of fun if you are into that sort of thing. Get a t-shirt and stuff.

New article says Chicago one of the most overrated cities in the world:
and I quote
"Chicago
Spend a little time in the Windy City and you'll come to know a people obsessed with the answer to a question nobody else has ever asked: "Is Chicago a world class city?" As a former local, I can help. The answer is no. Chicago is a handsome, reasonably entertaining provincial capital. This used to be enough for Chicagoans, but then it wasn't, leading to a period of time, beginning around the turn of the new century, during which all manner of foolishness -- from baffling things built by celebrity architects to a slew of obnoxious restaurants -- was unleashed upon the city. Suddenly, everything was pretty much the same, except now it was way more expensive. Yes, the city has some iconic cultural institutions and that beautiful lakefront. But look too far past the glittering Potemkin village at Chicago's center and you'll find yourself near or at the bottom of a sad pile of poor to average.
Instead, try Go to Detroit. It's more honest. Also, there's a great art museum, a proper public market, some of the country's best architecture, the music scene is fun, the food scene is better than it has been in ages and the beer is better and much cheaper. Everything's cheaper. Also: Detroiters are friendly -- Chicagoans are just polite. There's a big difference."
being from Detroit I'll tell you Detroit sucks compared to Chicago, but I have lived in and been to much nicer cities than Chicago, like Seattle, Portland, etc...
i laughed so hard. clearly this writer is relying on the hope that no one thats ever been to detroit will read his article. i've been there, and you couldnt pay me to go back. i could honestly Smell detroit the moment i got off the plane.. wtf is that about?

Honestly Minneapolis is the best smelling city I've been to. Chicago is pretty stinky, and nearby Gary is a fucking joke, pretty sure I've developed some form of cancer driving through there so often.
NYC is probably the stinkiest IMO.. the subway system in NYC makes me want to vomit, it is the unholy trinity of stinky, dirty, and full of some of the worst types of people. I've never been so uncomfortable on public transit in my life.

i think Gary was where cancer originated from. ive never been to Minneapolis. but i was lucky enough to be at the game in chicago when their Vikings had Favre and Peterson, Week 16 2009 season. Bears won in over time, but fawk it was cold. im not a favre fan by any means, but watching him throw was something awesome that im currently struggling to put into words. if the saints didnt break him that year, they would have won the super bowl.
i have no desire to visit new york. ever. i hear chicago's public trans is pretty awesome, but i can tell you we have our share of scum bags hanging out down there too.. dont lean against anything in the subway as it was probably peed on.
